Laura-Mary Carter
Shares new single, “Ceremony”
Solo debut, Town Called Nothing due 3rd December
Laura-Mary Carter, best known as one half of rockers Blood Red Shoes, will make her solo debut this December with the release of mini-album, Town Called Nothing.
A much quieter and more contemplative sound than her usual guitar-shredding anthems, Town Called Nothing was written in between tours at various sublets and studios in the UK and Los Angeles.
“I found a beat up acoustic guitar and without thinking about it songs just started to come to me,” she shares. “The idea of writing on an acoustic guitar was new to me, I’d always written songs for my band which has a very heavy disposition. I realised that writing in this intimate way exposed my voice and changed the way I was writing and singing lyrics.”
Following title-track “Town Called Nothing“, now Laura-Mary shares new single “Ceremony“. The accompanying video sees her performing the song in Jimi Hendrix’s bedroom, backed by a band consisting of Seb Rochford (Polar Bear, Electric Ladyland, Patti Smith), Jack Flanagan (The Mystery Jets) and Patrick Walden (Babyshambles).
“We all felt really good playing in that room, it definitely added some magic to what we were playing.. I fell in love with the blue curtains and apparently Jimi got them from John Lewis (I had no idea John Lewis was around that long!). You learn something everyday.”
Laura-Mary Carter allows the new live session to showcase this truly intimate side of the musician. Breaking away from her role so well known in Blood Red Shoes and delivering this solo pursuit in which allows Laura-Mary to proudly push a refreshing new character into her vision. Sultry with lashes of ferocity whilst oozing emotion and complexity into the dynamic vocal range, “Ceremony” is simply compelling. With this fierce ensemble, Carter keeps the intimacy as key for this journey.
Showcasing her unique vocal range and this real emotionally invested instrumentation. Exploring this impressive world filled with Americana influence and countless rich textures and immersive hooks. Laura-Mary Carter delivers this visible soundscape which pulls you in and provides a picture so clear to enhance the lyrics of the ensemble.
Laura-Mary explains of “Ceremony”: “The song is about my career. It’s about being in debt to someone and trying to break free. It’s about the feeling of not having a choice but to make music because that’s who I am but that sometimes comes with a price or with massive sacrifices. It’s about making peace with the choices and decisions I have made over the years and moving forward.”
Of the writing process, she adds, “Ceremony started with the bass-line and I really enjoyed the feel as it reminded me of The Pink Room, a track from the David Lynch movie “Fire Walk With Me”.
“I created the song around the groove, which is very different to the rest of the mini album as the other songs all started with the guitar and voice. I wanted it to be percussion driven so I found random stuff I could hit, shake, smash that would add interesting layers and create an uneasy feeling. I wanted the guitars to sound like violins that bite like rattlesnakes. I always imagined it to be the last song on the record, so it fades out at the end like the end credits of a movie.”
