Rad Releases 20 –Gregory Uhlmann

It’s that time once again, as the countdown to the end of 2020 rapidly approaches and we quickly want to move away from this year- we take a personal look back on familiar names, labels, promoters, and musicians’ best releases of the past 12 months. In what has been a challenging year for all, the one constant has been how artists and their labels have adapted and produced some of the best records of our time and it’s those releases that have the audience has depended on to get them through the year.

This year the Rad Releases special celebrates 10 years, to mark the decade-long feature we let our favorites take over the site to tell us the records that have kept them going throughout this trying year. Telling us how they’ve adapted, if they’ve returned to a loved record and what we can look forward to from them next year.

Our next takeover comes from an artist we are so thrilled we discovered in 2020. We speak to the wonderful singer-songwriter and guitarist Gregory Uhlmann. We were first introduced to this artist back in the summer, Gregory is a member of Perfume Genius, Fell Runner and the genre-bending improvising trio Typical Sisters and released his new album “Neighborhood Watch“ via Topshelf Records on July 24th. Uhlmann released one of the most inspiring releases of the year. “Neighborhood Watch” is a rivetting record, full of luring lyrics, bursting with emotion, and an intimate insight into such a promising artist. We handover to Gregory to find out more about their year in music…

The best show you have played this year / gig attended (if you had the opportunity at the start of the year)

The last show I played before our current Covid-19 nightmare was an extremely fun show with my band at Zebulon sharing a bill with Resavoir and Dustin Wong, Jeremiah Chiu, and Booker Stardrum.

Has there been any record that’s got you through this year? If so what.

One record I’ve been enjoying very much this year is Gabor Szabo’s Dreams. Thanks to Jeff Parker for telling me about that one.

How have you adapted with releasing/recording/promoting during this year?

Releasing this year was bizarre, but I’m really grateful to Topshelf Records for powering through and being enthusiastic and inventive in these uncharted waters. I’m not sure I adapted very well to be honest (wasn’t really feeling the livestream thing), but it in general it has forced me to get more self sufficient with recording and mixing. I tend to like a certain degree of collaboration which is inherently a little more difficult with distance and poor internet connection.

Best discovery this year?

I highly recommend drinking more dandelion tea and eating more sunchokes.

As this is our 10th year of Rad Releases, we want to look back on your 10 years- has there been on standout moment/standout record of the past 10 years for you- please share!

Hmmmm, this is a tricky one. Too many fond moments and records listened to. I moved to LA about 10 years ago and I will say that just making music with so many people and seeing so many amazing shows has been incredible.

Artist/Band to watch for 2021

I think all the artists on the best of list should be watched and listened to! They are all great.

Plans for the New Year

Hopeful plans for next year are to get vaccinated followed by playing many shows.

Thank you so much, your album moved us this year and we hope for the best for 2021
