Rad Releases 20 – Sad Club Records

It’s that time once again, as the countdown to the end of 2020 rapidly approaches and we quickly want to move away from this year- we take a personal look back on familiar names, labels, promoters, and musicians’ best releases of the past 12 months. In what has been a challenging year for all, the one constant has been how artists and their labels have adapted and produced some of the best records of our time and it’s those releases that have the audience has depended on to get them through the year.

This year the Rad Releases special celebrates 10 years, to mark the decade-long feature we let our favorites take over the site to tell us the records that have kept them going throughout this trying year. Telling us how they’ve adapted, if they’ve returned to a loved record and what we can look forward to from them next year.

Our next takeover comes from a label we’ve really admired this year. Throughout the last 12 months we’ve seen how powerful Sad Club Records are, and the labels impressive vision to promote their artists. Throughout 2020, Sad Club Records have thrown themselves into supporting the very best releases, most of which have appeared on several of our end of year lists. This year alone, we’ve been thrilled to add some of Sad Club Records physical releases into our own collection. They’ve also introduced us to Swallow Cave and Clara Mann to name a few. We handover to Tallulah of Sad Club Records to find out more about their year in music…

Top Releases

1. Rosehip Teahouse – Chillin’ In The Void

Haha this was our own release, but even if it wasn’t, it would still be first on the list! I love this band SO much and have wanted to work with them for so long, and this release actually saved 2020 for me. Its beautiful, lush, romantic and extremely sad. I … Can’t even!

2.HAIM – Women In Music Pt. III

I can’t stop dancing. HAIM have bitten back with an even better album than the one before. I have probably listened to this for at least 50+ hours and pissed a lot of people off.

3.Max Richter – All Human Beings

He’s managed to turn the Universal Declaration of Human Rights into an absolutely magical work of art. This album soothes your soul and transports you to a luscious place. Its the perfect album for 2020, to help you out of it rather than to suck you back in.

4.2nd Grade- Hit To Hit

This is such a fun indie-pop album, highlights are ‘Velodrome’ or ‘W-2’. This album got me to start running in the middle of winter. I’ve stopped now, but still, it must have been something

5.Blackaby – What’s On The TV?

I released this EP with the amazing label Hand In Hive, and it absolutely rocks. I love Blackaby and everything he comes out with, and this is solid b-2-b bangers.

Has there been any record that’s got you through this year? .

Aside from the ones I’ve mentioned, I had this playlist which was sickeningly indie-pop that I made earlier this year. I had songs like ‘The Camera Loves Me’ by Would-Be-Goods and stuff like that. When I was totally uninspired I’d just listen to that and it really helped

The best show you have played this year / gig attended (if you had the opportunity at the start of the year)

Haha oh god. I think one of my last shows was Peaness in Leeds. That was amazing!

How have you adapted with releasing/recording/promoting during this year?

It’s been a really odd year. At the start there were loads of livestreams but then people got bored. It’s just all about the internet, but even MORE now.

Best discovery this year?

Does this have to be about music? Found the tastiest gluten free sweet potato wraps a few months ago and they changed my life.

Label Highlight of 2020

Working with so many amazing people has for sure been a highlight, such as Swallow Cave and Clara Mann.

As this is our 10th year of Rad Releases, we want to look back on your 10 years- has there been on standout moment/standout record of the past 10 years for you?

Past 10 years!!!!! that is a pretty long time. I’m not going to lie, but this is the first time I’ve ever thought about the last 10 years. My favourite release of the last 10 years has probably been Father, Son, Holy Ghost by Girls or Adam Green & Binki Shapiro’s record.

Artist/Band to watch for 2021

All of our artists eh! But nah, there are so many. I’m super excited about ‘Bored at my Grandma’s House’ on Clue Records. She’s sick!

Label Plans for the New Year

Theres a few EP’s and an album already planned. Its gonna be a bit of same same but different. More of the same artists + more, plus a whole different format!

Thank you Sad Club Records, excited for your year ahead
