Rad Releases 20 – Apollo Noir

It’s that time once again, as the countdown to the end of 2020 rapidly approaches and we quickly want to move away from this year- we take a personal look back on familiar names, labels, promoters, and musicians’ best releases of the past 12 months. In what has been a challenging year for all, the one constant has been how artists and their labels have adapted and produced some of the best records of our time and it’s those releases that have the audience has depended on to get them through the year.

This year the Rad Releases special celebrates 10 years, to mark the decade-long feature we let our favorites take over the site to tell us the records that have kept them going throughout this trying year. Telling us how they’ve adapted, if they’ve returned to a loved record and what we can look forward to from them next year.

Clément Moussiere

Our first artist take-over of the year comes from the visionary artist Apollo Noir. The creative musician, just weeks ago, dropped his monumental new album “Weapons” via Tigersushi Records & Santé Records, which we urge you all to check out- easily a late contender of AOTY. The latter label also being a familiar name in recent weeks to the site, 2020 has been a remarkable year for this music label which is focused on Avant-Garde alternative music and is curated by Apollo Noir & Botine. We hand over to Apollo Noir to discover more about their year in music….

Top Releases Of 2020

HV$VH : i

We released this via my record label Santé Records. I love it so much, it is so singular, special, and mutant! Never heard anything like this before

Nebulo : Parallaxes

An incredible released via french super cool records label Le Cabanon. This new Nebulo record pushes the level further in terms of sound sculpting. I love the way it sounds, the space it has and how silence is important in this record.

The Garden : Kiss My Super Bowl Ring

It’s an intense, wild, raw, free and really well produced record.

Khotin : Finds You Well

My « feel good record of the year ». It just sounds good and sweet to my ears.

Oneohtrix Point Never : Magic

Incredible new OPN’s record sound quite like his R+7 with amazing experimental pop parts.

Jon Collin & Demdike Stare : Sketches of Everything

Really love this one. Acoustic, filed recording, drone, left field kinda improvised stuff.

Fujita : iki

One of the nicest records I’ve listened to this year. Only organ, deep, almost religious, magnificent.

Alexis Marshall : Nature In Three Movements

Lead singer from Daughters teamed up with Young Widows & co musicians for this single. I love it because it’s more experimental than Daughters and all this noise hardcore rock scene work.
It pushes the genre further, closer to Swans for instance that I love so much.

The best show you have played this year or gig attended  (if had the opportunity at the start of the year)

I had a blast playing at la Station, PARIS for MOFO Festival ! it was CRAZY and wild 🙂

Has there been any record that’s got you through this year?

For sure it would be Daughters ‘ « You Won’t Get What You Want » released in 2018. I’ve been obsessed with haha. This record is so dark and angry : it helped me to feel and live my inner anger quite easily 🙂

How have you adapted with releasing/recording/promoting during this year?

No gigs since march, so I’ve been quite a lot at the studio 🙂
I’ve finished my 3rd LP. Record an ambient album with Adrien Pallot, finished an EP with my wife (to be released on my record label Santé Records early 2021), started a noise hardcore band with my dear friend Serguei Spoutnik. And I’ve also produced many tracks, few EPs and albums for other artists, did some remixes, mixes…

And finally get more involved in releasing other artists music since I have launched my own record label Santé Records with my friend Botine.
I’m also working with Thomas Pons an illustrator for upcoming shows / performances / installations 🙂

Best discovery this year?

Ciccone Youth’s The Whitey Album from 1988. I bought the CD like 10 years ago, lost it and I found it back this year. I love this record so much, it blends many different genres, it’s really free.

As this is our 10th year of Rad Releases, we want to look back on your 10 years- has there been on standout moment/standout record of the past 10 years?

For sure it is when I started Apollo Noir back in 2015 and then released my first records in 2017 « A/N ». It really represent for me my birth as an artist and so many important meetings (Serguei Spoutnik, Tigersushi Crew)

Artist To Watch For 2021
