Ten years ago, on a home desktop printer, Stuart Stubbs printed 150 copies of a fanzine he’d made called Loud And Quiet. It wasn’t very good. The images were blurred, the design was crooked and all of the writers’ names were made up. Considering the goal was to start a new music magazine that looked as good as it read, it was extremely wide of the mark, yet, oblivious to this, Stuart would leave handfuls of Loud And Quiet 1 in record stores and venues around London whilst getting to work on a follow up.

A fresh copy of Loud And Quiet has been independently published every month since, by Stuart and a dedicated team of writers and photographers who at first saw something in those DIY, black and white pages in 2005, and have since come to respect the magazine as a legitimate fixture in the UK’s alternative music scene. 32,000 newsprint copies are now printed and distributed nationwide via record shops, venues, bars, universities, cafes, clothes shops and two international airports.

Key to Loud And Quiet’s ongoing success is those who loyally contribute to it each month, and 10 Years of Loud And Quiet magazine: A Photography Exhibition is a celebration of independent publishing, and particularly the photographers that have played an insurmountable role in realizing the goal of a music publication that doesn’t scrimp on aesthetics and design.

From October 23rd until November 13th, a selection of 20 images commissioned by Loud And Quiet over the past decade will hang in the main space of Hackney music venue and bar Oslo, showcasing the talents of photographers Andrew Kendall, Phil Sharp, Sonny McCartney, Owen Richards, Nathaniel Turner, Gem Harris, Guy Eppel, Tim Cochrane, Tom Cockram, Elinor Jones, Dan Kendall, Gabriel Green, Pavla Kopecna and Andreas Ante Johansson.

Between them, they’ve photographed David Lynch, Bat For Lashes, Erol Alkan, Grimes, The Horrors and Metronomy, for exclusive interviews in Loud And Quiet, as far back as 2005.

Owen Richard’s shots of The xx are some of the first that were ever taken of the band, while Andreas Ante Johansson remains the only photographer to shoot the masked, clandestine psych group GOAT, for Loud And Quiet’s October 2014 cover feature.

Come and see for yourself from October 23rd.
