Of Self
The Liars Club are a band that mix caustic punk with barbed melodies to create a sound, that although has an element of coldness to it, has a hell of a lot of heart and soul as well. The band’s latest EP Of Self features five songs of music that sound as confident as it does rousing.
Of Self, a five-track EP follows a bevy of single releases over the past few years and sees the band bellowing out huge slabs of powerful and defiant punk anthems.
The opening salvo of 8 Tonne kicks things off and sees The Liars Club start as they mean to go on with a powerfully confident track that channels the vibe of bands like Gang Of Four and Killing Joke brilliantly and sees the band take a commanding start on this release. That commanding start quickly segues into the berserk punk of Tutankhamun, a full-on storming track with a pulsating bassline and some gnarled vocals throughout that sounds like The Ruts mixed with Motörhead and The Damned, and definitely as good as that sounds.
The comparatively more laid back Freak follows and shows off another side to the bands sound and while it is not as manic as what preceded it, it has a heavy vibe all of its own, and the same has to be said for PKB which has its own energy and pace with a Cramps like feel about it and a brilliantly sarcastic snarl and bite throughout.
Of Self ends with the punk stomp of Cactus and this is a headbanging and limb flailing anthem from start to finish with some Birthday Party era Nick Cave vocals to boot and a groove that is unhinged as that band were in their prime and is a perfect way to finish things off properly.
The Liars Club are certainly a band going places with the songs to match and the all-important attitude to back it up with and Of Self is a cracking collection of tracks that manages to merge the spirit of punk and post-punk perfectly but in their own unique fashion and this is a band we hope to hear a lot of in the future.
