Eades announce new EP ‘Abstract Education’ – out April 30th via Heist or Hit

New single ‘Present In The Moment’

Bouncing their way into 2021 with infectious new single ‘Former Warnings Cluster’, and a record deal to boot, Leeds quintet Eades keep the good news rolling by announcing new EP ‘Abstract Education’ for April 30th via Manchester Heist or Hit (Her’s, Pizzagirl, Hannah’s Little Sister).

From this they share the dynamic new single ‘Present In The Moment’. A chaotic maelstrom of guitars, skittish drums and yelped vocals are knocked in line by a persistent cowbell tut. Teetering on the edge of solidity, the absent-minded nature of the instrumentation, constantly being pulled back into focus for key moments, reflects the titular lyrical themes, as lead vocalist Harry Jordan explains:

“I was away on holiday with my girlfriend in Australia for 3 weeks, and by the last week I was itching to get back and write some music. When I haven’t done any music in a while I go a bit stir crazy and start getting really agitated and go off into my own little world inside my head. I wrote the lyrics just after we’d had an argument because apparently I wasn’t “present in the moment”… I hate to admit it but she was probably right. I swear I’m not normally that angsty.”

Eades continues to be one of the most exhilarating acts around right now. Their dynamic take on biting instrumentation mixing with their raw lyrics create this necessary and compelling journey. Eades have perfected their ability to meld their musical buoyancy with a lyrical path that’s deeply relatable.

Fusing this bold blend of sharp textures, piercing angular guitar notes and brash yet mighty percussive led beats that become this dense atmosphere for the vocal notes to brush against. Once again, another vivacious arrangement, the confrontational yet melody-driven vocal harmonies fusing with the glistening hooks, the combination just explodes. “Present In The Moment” presents itself as this rapturous piece, it’s brisk, it’s contagious and it showcases the power of each musician.

Abstract Education’ will be the band’s second EP, following a 2020 debut that earned praise from, amongst many others – FADERNME and DIY at press and BBC 6 Music (Steve Lamacq), Radio 1 (Jack SaundersGemma Bradley) and KCRW on the airwaves. It’s an invigorating collection of songs – paying homage to various guitar traditions whilst not taking itself too seriously.

Like New York Bowery clubrats misreading the instruction manual for British post-punk, their sound is assembled somewhere within the shifting textures of rhythmic convulsions and low-fidelity rawness. Having four songwriters and two producers at their disposal it’s little surprise that the band pack a pluralistic punch, taking in new wave, art-punk, noise-rock, garage rock and 90s alternative.

Well-rounded, they channel that rare alchemy of a group with heart, brains, and an ear for a hook. Perhaps some of this sharpness is derived from their DIY approach; all songs are cooked up in the band’s own subterranean Bam Bam Studios. This time around too there’s a new element in the mix, matching the addictive, high-stakes rush of an Eades live show by committing their recordings straight to tape.

Harry elaborates on the process:

For our second EP we approached it from a completely different angle to our debut. Firstly we decided to perform the instrumentals live without a click track or anything to allow us to speed up or slow and reacta bit more like our live shows which we felt had an energy we hadn’t got across in our previous recordings.

Secondly it was the first  time any of us recorded to tape which added some extra stresses and hurdles we haven’t had to deal with in the past. The limitations on how many tracks meant we had to be a lot more selective with our parts and make sure  everything playing was there for a reason. Luckily  we’ve always had a more minimal approach to arranging songs so this wasn’t too difficult. The main thing I struggled with was mixing with tape and how much longer it takes to do everything. Things that would take 5 minutes on a computer would take an hour!

We learnt a lot with the recording process of the EP working out what stuff we would and wouldn’t do again for the album…”

Eades are Harry Jordan (Vocals and Guitar), Tom O’Reilly (Lead Guitar), Dave Lancaster (Bass), Dan Clifford-Smith (Drums) and Lily Fontaine (Synths, Percussion, Backing Vocals).
