On the rise Brighton three-piece Something Leather are tackling 2020 head-on with their debut EP ‘Midnight Reverie’, which showcases their elegant take on dark psych rock.
Of new single ‘Trip To The Sun’ we’re told “The song is a sarcastic take on the Fall of Icarus: it deals with our constant desire to escape from a deadly routine and the fear that pushing too far might consume you. It has a frenetic pace, western B-movie shootout feel and layers of post-punk and psychedelia on top.”
Released via feminist indie We Can Do It Records, the EP oozes a vintage vibe with 70s electric organ complementing eerie, untamed guitar noise, all tied together by relentless rhythmical drum beats while an array of synths and electronics add modern textures.
‘Midnight Reverie’ veers through moments of audacious noise-outs with searing guitars that playfully counter organ heavy, groove-infused breakdowns, such as on new single ‘Trip To The Sun’. The addition of slow-burner ‘Midnight Dive’ sees the band step back with an entrancing personal ballad which highlights the EPs fuller concepts; the chaos of love, desire and looking inwards. With their contrastingly upbeat yet gothic verse deliveries and anthemic choruses, Something Leather continue to keep listeners guessing with delightfully intricate songwriting that’s seeped in darkness.
A triumphant 2019 saw successful UK and European tours establish an increasing following for the band, with singles ‘Sip the Thrill’ and ‘Velvet’ securing attention from the likes of Clash Magazine, Dork, Gigwise and more.
The year culminated with latest single ‘Lullaby’ garnering further support from the likes of Flying Vinyl and BBC 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq. The trio have already gained a reputation for explosive live shows thanks to a host of support slots with up-and-coming bands including Black Midi, Saint Agnes, Japanese Television, Sophie and the Giants, Calva Louise and Phobophobes.
Citing influences ranging from Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and Yak, to Cherry Glazerr and Alexandra Savior, Something Leather are an intriguingly captivating group who create an intricate world that oscillates between fantasy and nightmare.
