Automatic Share New Nick Zinner Remix “Black Box”
Touring US, UK and Europe
Ahead of their upcoming tour, Automatic releases Nick Zinner’s remix of “Black Box”. Continuing the momentum from their latest albumIs It Now?, Automatic reveals a new take on record highlight “Black Box,” remixed by Nick Zinner. Zinner brings the song into a dark, edgy disco realm while preserving the original’s tension and minimalist grooves.
Written around the image of a plane in freefall, the relentless synth motif of “Black Box” aims to evoke both the eerie glide of a crashing aircraft and the pulse of an unanswered distress signal, while its title references the flight recorder left behind after a catastrophe. Inspired in part by Leonard Cohen’s “The Future,” Izzy Glaudini’s lyrics discuss the commercialization of art and the creative industries, echoing Thierry Mugler’s observation that “art used to tell money what to do, now money tells art what to do” and even the “winners” are left with little more than the wreckage.
The track was already a hit before, but with Zinner’s touch there is a new lease of life and a euphoric essence which flows with ease throughout.
Earlier this month, the band played live on KEXP, performing “Black Box” and other tracks from Is It Now? Check out the performance here. Automatic embarks on an extensive tour across North America, Europe and the UK beginning in early August.
