release new EP ‘Toska’ out on 24th March

“Beautifully restrained work, lush strings and gentle ripples of piano” Clash

“throwing fistfuls of strings and heartbeat bass lines at soaring choruses” NME 8/10

“stirring stuff instrumentally, the most compelling aspect is found in the beautiful vocals” The Fly

Following on from their critically acclaimed second album Let Me Come Home, March 24th marks the return of Broken Records with the release of their new EP ‘Toska’ and a short run of UK live dates.

Produced by Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Delgados, Belle & Sebastian) the ‘Toska’ EP is a visceral cathartic body of work that revisits the masterful orchestration of the first album while combining the intense, relentlessly aggressive and turbulent sound of the last. The opening title track is a cinematic requiem that instantly immerses the listener into the world of Broken Records. Toska is a song that uncovers dark places within relationships and tackling their endings.

‘See You On The Way Down’ combines ambulating rhythm, sparse piano, dramatic strings and Sutherland’s piercing yet honest lyrics. Leading into ‘Ward 3’, the heart wrenching intricate arrangement sits perfectly over the echo and drift of field recording loops. Contrasting with this the epic and uplifting ‘Revival’ returns to thrashing guitars, triumphant brass and cacophonous percussion closing the EP with a burst of optimism.

Notably Broken Records have released through prestigious indie labels including 4AD (who released both previous albums) and other releases include Young Turks, Fandango and Distiller Records. They have toured with The National and Freelance Whales and in 2010 headline toured the US. Their festival performances include Glastonbury, SXSW, T in the Park and a main-stage slot at Latitude.

Broken Records are Jamie Sutherland (vocals, piano), Rory Sutherland (violin, guitar, accordion), Ian Turnbull (guitar, piano, accordion), Dave Smith (piano, trumpet), Craig Ross (guitar, bass) and Andrew Keeney (drums).

The Broken Records hit the road with their dynamic live show described as ‘without a weak link. Sutherland’s voice swoops from pitch-perfect falsetto to sonorous baritone without missing a note’ (Guardian). They are set to release their third album ‘Weights and Pulleys’ in May 2014.
