Tusks Shares New Single “Cold Storm (TAAHLIAH Remix)“

London-based electronic songwriter and producer Tusks has announced the release of a series of remixes, featuring I. JORDAN, TAAHLIAH and Sm^sher. The artists rework tracks taken from her album ‘Gold’, the second of which, ‘Cold Storm (TAAHLIAH Remix)’, will be released on September 2nd via One Little Independent Records.
TAAHLIAH’s remix of Tusks’ ‘Cold Storm’ accentuates the duality at the heart of the track; quiet vulnerability clashing with raw power. TAAHLIAH’s club-rooted hyperpop electrifies Tusks’ slow-burning original composition. As one of the UK’s most compelling new voices in electronic music, and a trailblazer for trans and queer representation in dance culture, TAAHLIAH has found her own voice in an already emotionally rich piece.
Tusks says; “I love how Taahliah has reworked this track into a completely different sound but still it sits in the same kind of dreamlike space that it was initially created in. It gives me this deep feeling of nostalgia and euphoria when I listen to it – I really love how she’s layered the vocal elements and everything slowly builds to this climax at the end- it’s great.”
What a beautiful rework, this elevated euphoria runs throughout the escalating cadence of this composition.
Speaking about the full EP, Tusks continues; “I think I. JORDAN, TAAHLIAH and Sm^sher are some of the most interesting producers in their fields at the moment and I wanted to bring them together on this release to weave some of the tracks from Gold into new interpretations and genres. It’s amazing hearing something you’ve worked on for so long and listened to so many times be completely reimagined by someone else into something you could never imagine sonically.”
‘Gold’ explored the complexities and subtleties of relationships in a way that’s both reflective and relatable. It mapped the various stages in the breakdown of a romance, while also considering the impact of isolation, both individual and collective, as well as anxiety, mental health, and the wider effects of austerity.
Early in her career, Tusks drew comparisons to Sigur Rós and Explosions In The Sky, earning support from the likes of BBC 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne, BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac and Huw Stephens, Rolling Stone, Billboard, Mixmag, MOJO, Wonderland, and more. Her debut album ‘Dissolve’ was released to critical acclaim and was co-produced with Brett Cox (Jack Garratt, alt-J, Marika Hackman). Her second album, ‘Avalanche’, saw Tusks venture further into the realms of grunge and shoegaze. Taking inspiration from My Bloody Valentine, Marika Hackman and Wolf Alice, the album brought her a growing global fanbase, alongside syncs in hit shows such as Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why.
Having previously supported Khruangbin, Ásgeir, Bear’s Den, and Submotion Orchestra, Tusks embarked on her first European and UK headline tour in early 2020, with performances including London’s prestigious Village Underground (which she recorded and released as a live album) and Berlin’s Berghain Panorama Bar. In 2021, she collaborated with CJ Mirra on the original soundtrack for the feature film A Banquet.
‘Gold’ has received praise from the likes of Chris Hawkins, Deb Grant, Tom Ravenscroft, and BBC 6 Music’s New Music Fix, as well as John Kennedy (Radio X), NPR, The Line of Best Fit, Headliner Magazine, Clash Magazine, and more. Tusks played a series of exclusive in-store shows, including Rough Trade East, and toured extensively across the UK and EU.
