Ani Glass Releases New Single “Acwariwm”
Taken From Forthcoming Album “Phantasmagoria” Due September 26th
Award-winning, Cardiff-based artist, Ani Glass, releases her new single ‘Acwariwm’ on the 5th of September. An illuminating and resplendent pop earworm underpinned by pulsing beats, shimmering synths: a glowing sonic tapestry, intricately woven with Ani’s iridescent melodies that radiate a transfixing warmth and light. According to her, it’s about “reconnecting with the world around you and reminding yourself to keep looking for hope in every corner, even when things seem dark.” It’s lifted from her new album ‘Phantasmagoria’ on the 26th of September, European Day of Languages.
Ani Glass has always been an artist that captures such an array of emotion and progression within their work, it’s so refreshing to have Ani back on the scene with new material that you can easily resonate with. As the new single commences, the first introduction to that courageous bass tone immediately cements this immense foundation for the dreamy soundscape to elevate from.
The lyrics and the pop-inspired tonalities fuse with the sublime and delicate vocal harmonies, the song is a truly enriching exploration that will hook you. And whilst the song reflects on the outcome of an underlining brooding darkness, the rich cuts and the dreamy vocal tones polish the perfectness of the uplifting theme that resolves itself. A truly glistening and beautiful voyage from start to finish.
Ani’s strong pop sensibility had been cemented during her time as a member of the band, Genie Queen (managed by OMD’s Andy McCluskey), but she was particularly inspired by the experience of working with Martin Rushent as a member of indiepop group, The Pipettes. Additional inspirations included 1980s artists and producers Giorgio Moroder, Vangelis, Jean-Michel Jarre and Arthur Russell (who inspired her to learn the cello).
At the start of 2020, just before the release of ‘Mirores’, Ani was diagnosed with a rare benign brain tumour. The diagnosis marked the beginning of the personal journey that has shaped ‘Phantasmagoria’. That final shape is a lush, introspective concept album that delves deeply into her experience of navigating life since then.
Phantasmagoria unites the languages and mediums at Ani’s disposal to express a poignant time in her life, with lyrics in Cymraeg (Welsh), Kernewek (Cornish) and English, as well as some British Sign Language woven into her live performance.
Futuristic, fascinating pop. Ethereal vocals, lush instrumentation and swirling synth pulses echo early Goldfrapp or Enya, but this is all Ani Glass. Phantasmagoria is intricate, ethereal, expansive – and newly revealing with every listen.
