Just a few days after picking up their debut record from Grinning Soul Records and today we are delighted to share the news that Sister Wives are back, the excitement to hit play on the new single was another level!
Sheffield’s Sister Wives return with new single “Malady” – their first new music since their 2022 Welsh Music Prize nominated debut album, Y Gawres.
Unearthing forgotten feminist histories through myth and landscape, Sister Wives weave wild tales braiding the Welsh and English language over their signature glam-droog-acid-stomp. Haunting 4-part harmonies drift atop heavy psychedelia, avant space rock and ferocious fuzz-laden folk.
The band’s songs deal with ever shifting expectations and injustices, forgone heroines, the divine feminine and the veiled mysteries of ancient lands.
“Malady” is about “an inner ‘beast’ waking up inside your body; backing you up and empowering you to stand up to bad men,” they share. “It’s also about how strong females frighten said bad men and historically this power is perceived as a sickness, madness, or malady…”
From the first note, the listener is surrounded by the expressive landscape, the drum shuffles paced with that vibrating low-end captivates. With the initial depth of the first tone that emerges and the layered delicate vocal harmonies that commence and build up the layers of this ensemble, the audience is hooked on the release before the energy abruptly alters the essence. Just like that, the fuzz of the guitar strikes through the ambience and the cymbals hit harder, the tonality oozes this mammoth feel and Sister Wives shift the intensity of their voyage. This boisterous composition packs a punch, the musicians have produced this vivid adventurous ensemble, capturing their attitude, and their aggressive riffs whilst shining a light on the ethereal harmonies simultaneously. “Malady” is a fierce hit!
Sister Wives have also experienced a line-up change since their last record, welcoming Rachael Loomes (also of R. Loomes/Haus Horo) who started writing with the band after filling in for previous guitarist Liv Willars’ maternity leave.
In recent years, Sister Wives have been in session for Marc Riley’s BBC6Music show, been invited to play Green Man twice, headlined a sold-out London gig, performed on Welsh channel S4C and have shared bills with Gwenno, Self Esteem, The Lovely Eggs, The New Eves, Adwaith, and Crack Cloud.
