Wylderness Return With New Single “Big Idea”
Cardiff’s Wylderness return with their brand new single “Big Idea”, which is out now. The new single is taken from the shoegaze outfit’s forthcoming new EP which is titled “Safe Mode” and is due to be released in 2025.
The first thing that grips your attention when the track plays is its woozy tonality. It shimmers through the hazy soundscape and fiercely embeds this hypnotic imprint into the composition. The notes entwine with the robust drum hits and crisp percussive shuffles, the brooding vocal harmonies join and this twinkling shift of intensity flourishes. As the journey unfolds, the band deliver one of the most dazzling and melodic arrangements dropped this year, a world lavish with captivating textures to create this elusive environment. The low-end and brooding harmonies that showcase this immersive lyrical voyage deliver some serious melancholic reflections thanks to the darker notes that flirt with the expressive elements.
A track that can be challenged as a 90’s cult hit whilst still liberating this innovative and current touch. Although just released, the band has produced something with a timeless appeal. Hit play, get lost in the rhythm and then repeat continuously.
Wylderness’ eponymous debut album, released in 2018, was championed by Steve Lamacq (BBC 6 Music), Huw Stephens (BBC Radio 1) and was part of Radio 1’s Best of BBC Music Introducing. It garnered critical acclaim from Clash, DIY and Drowned in Sound, with the song On a Dais being featured on the US version of the TV show Shameless..
The Cardiff band’s second album, Big Plans for a Blue World (2022), was recorded with an expanded line up and featured added layers of vintage synths and clarinet. It placed no.28 in Far Out Magazine’s Best Albums of 2022 and charted in the North American College & Community Radio Chart.
