Our Girl Sign to Bella Union and Release New Single “Relief”

Bella Union are thrilled to announce the signing of Our Girl who later this year will release their long-awaited second album via the label. As a first taste of the album, the London-based trio today release their captivating new single “Relief”. The track speaks to the life-giving importance of queer community; a sentiment reflected in the chorus of friends’ voices accompanying singer/songwriter Soph Nathan as the song builds to its close.

Commenting on the track, Soph Nathan says: “This is a love song to queer people having a hard time of it. It takes time to unlearn things we were taught to believe, and to feel wholly proud in the face of people and expectations that are often working against you. This song is about my experience of moving through that, and celebrating how I feel now.”

Our Girl have created this formidable ensemble that continues to grow and gather this delirious momentum. The stirring motion moves with this wave-like continuum assisted with the rolling drum shuffles and cymbal strikes, the low-end strikes this complexity whilst the lead guitar melts through the soundscape with this sultry ease and the vocal harmonies captivate your full attention.

The lyrics touch with this sincere intimacy when the track breaks the intensity and begins this shift to rebuild the power, those words extend their power. The harmonies hit deep, elevated with the fierce tonality and the notes loop adding this intent to the powerful message as the musicians unite to shift the force with this abrasive burst, uniting to form this fast-paced euphoric crescendo that captures infectious melody and emotional attachment.

The expression of hard-fought optimism encapsulates Our Girl’s as-yet-unannounced second LP; dealing with themes of sexuality, relationships, community, and illness. Recorded at Rockfield studios and produced by John Parish (PJ Harvey, Aldous Harding, Dry Cleaning), Fern Ford (The Big Moon, Prima Queen), and Soph Nathan (also of The Big Moon), this album, filled with warmth and honesty, marks a significant artistic step forward since their acclaimed debut album, Stranger Today

Stepping into a production role for the first time, Soph Nathan recalls: “Working on this record taught me to trust my gut. I realised that we needed to make it sound and feel exactly how we wanted, otherwise what’s the point?” Lauren Wilson, who completes the line up alongside Josh Tyler, continues: “It feels more confident to me… a lot more considered, we’ve had time and space to write.”

This creative clarity permeates the album: both intimate and expansive, tonally nuanced and richly textured, it contains Soph Nathan’s most explicitly personal songwriting to date. This speaks to the journey the bandmates have each gone through in the years since their last LP, resolutely and fiercely committed to Our Girl, these three great friends not only know themselves better, but they know what they want to say, and exactly how they want it to sound.

Additionally, Our Girl have announced a number of upcoming live dates including a headline show at The Lexington in London in June and appearances at The Great Escape in Brighton and Wanderlust festival in Southampton next month. Upcoming dates and info below:
