‘Heaven’ EP out May 24th

In just the last six months, Softcult were nominated for Alternative Album of the Year at the Juno Awards, on the cover of Spotify’s new MARROW playlist (4.7 million followers), and have already toured the US and Australia. Over the next six, the Canadian twin sibling duo of Mercedes (she/her) and Phoenix (they/them) Arn-Horn will continue their headline run across the US, play Mexico for the first time, and release a new EP called ‘Heaven’ on May 24th.

Now, Softcult share a final preview of their blissful EP with “One Of The Pack,” a fuzzy inclusionary anthem that depicts their idea of Heaven as one that champions ALL women.

Mercedes and Phoenix explain: “When we wrote this song, we wanted to celebrate women supporting women, and of course that includes POC and transgender women. It’s sad that that’s something that I feel I need to specify and include in a statement like this, but the truth is there are some TERFs out there trying to exclude certain communities from feminism and even the term ‘woman.’ We pride ourselves on being intersectional feminists, even introducing riot grrrl feminism and activism to the shoegaze community in our own way, and we want anyone listening to our music to know that POC, trans women, and non-binary people will always be a welcome and crucial part of our grrrl gang.”

“This song is hopefully one you can sing to your best friend to let them know; ‘I know you have to deal with a lot of bullshit from other people, but I will always be here for you. I see you, I’ll support you, and I love you.’”

Yet another marvel from this highly anticipated EP which drops next month. Another track that captures the immense energy of Softcult as they delve into another varied and dynamic soundscape, gripping the audience with ardent concentration and the fusion of tones that alter from fuzz-fuelled to hazy, this world has it all. Softcult gets to share these vocal alterations too from softer harmonic melodies to lo-fi screaming, the composition flows through various tempo changes and brings this experimental touch to the forefront of a lasting atmosphere.

With all the tracks the outfit has shared from the forthcoming EP, they produce a sense of melancholy through the brooding tones and the rich influence, they allow this complex space to showcase the songwriting skills and the vibrance of the musicians bouncing off one another.

Imagine a world where everyone is accepted for who they are; where everyone has equal opportunity; where one’s background or identity does not dictate how they’re perceived by society; where privilege and advantages are recognised and shared to build stronger communities that celebrate diversity, difference, and otherness as strengths.

That’s ‘Heaven’ –– the new EP from Softcult calls attention to the contradiction of a society obsessed with the afterlife. Over its six tracks, Heaven further extends Softcult’s eclectic and wide-ranging sonic universe with elements of shoe gaze, grunge, riot grrrl, and pop.

Born in the studio, Softcult are building their own universe. With Phoenix running point on production, engineering, and artwork,  Mercedes directing/editing their videos, and both writing astoundingly-intimate lyrics about self-empowerment amidst social, political, and environmental collapse, the duo is about as DIY as it gets. They create and produce their own zine called SCripture, and are active participants in their Softcult Discord server, a safe online community for their fans, as spotlighted by AltPress.

Last year, Softcult released the breakout ‘See You in the Dark EP’, a worthy contender amidst their already-stacked discography that has garnered acclaim and buzz both in their home country of Canada and internationally. They’ve been championed by artists like Hayley Williams and Oli Sykes, have opened up for bands such as Incubus and MUSE. They toured the UK with Movements last year and will be returning later in 2024 – details to follow.
