Japanese Television Share New Single and Video “Golden Birds”

Second Album “Automata Exotica” due 22nd March 2024 by Tip Top Recordings

‘Golden Birds’, the latest single by space-surf-psych-rock quartet Japanese Television, is an expansive, krautrock inspired chugger. The band’s new drummer Kevin Barthelémy has created a brilliant stop-motion video for the track, which takes the viewer into a robot-controlled dystopian world of car chases, shiny avian giants, and abstract roadside message boards.

This rich sonically consuming landscape opens up and captures the alluring energy of this formidable outfit. This impressive tapestry of deep grooves, hypnotic hooks, the most desirable of all guitar tones, jaunty keys and this playful rhythmic approach. Japanese Television has this effortless ability to craft complex compositions that convey kaleidoscopic loops, powerful textures and infectious melodies. The sheer volume of intricate tweaks and oscillating effects in “Golden Birds” simply establishes this pure excitement for their craft and their forthcoming record.

Kevin explains, “In this world, robots have taken over, their favourite hobbies are chasing humans, watching TV and playing games on their phones. Humans (represented as the van) live on the run, in fear of being attacked by the golden birds sent by the robots. The miniature city fitted perfectly with the atmospheric dreamy intro and outro parts and the verse-chorus parts are like a close up into this fictional world that evolves with the intensity of the song.

I built as many props as possible using moss from the local park, sponges, cardboard and other recycled materials to create a rich environment that draws you in. I wanted the video to be dynamic, funny, have multiple layers, and also to leave some space for the viewer to make up their own story. I hope this video shows that with a bit of imagination, a pair of scissors, a camera, a couple of Ikea lamps, and a lot of time; you can create anything”.

The track is taken from their upcoming second album ‘Automata Exotica’, set for release on 22nd March 2024 by Tip Top Recordings. A combination of cyclical, mechanical rhythms, and heavy bass, ‘Automata Exotica’ is louder, tighter, bolder and rawer than anything Japanese Television have done before.

Automata Exotica’ follows Japanese Television’s 2022 debut ‘Space Fruit Vineyard’, a record which caught the support of BBC 6 Music (where they’ve had over 100 spot plays and recorded two sessions for Marc Riley), NME, So Young, Clash, DIY, Arts Desk, Gigwise, Radio X and more. A thrilling live proposition, Japanese Television launch the album in London before playing Ritual Union festival in Bristol and dates in France, Germany and the UK.
