Rad Releases 23 – Hilang Child

Our annual end-of-year feature is finally here, the time we enjoy the most where we spend the final two weeks of the year discussing the music that made 2023 special. Our Rad Releases feature is now into it’s 13th year, and we love sharing the site with musicians, labels, and promoters as we discuss their year in music. We take a personal look back on familiar names’ most loved releases of the past 12 months. It’s a time we enjoy and look forward to, through the contributions we get to find new music discoveries, and releases we may have missed throughout the year.

Our next takeover comes from an artist who installed so much excitement when new material was released back in September, we are so thrilled to discover more about Hilang Child, the alias of musician Ed Riman. This Autumn, Hilang Child has released two stunning new singles on his own imprint Left Hand Side via AWAL. A beautiful return to the scene with some of the most moving and immersive creations we’ve experienced this year. We hand over to Hilang Child to find out about this year in music.

Sigur Ros – Átta.

Expansive and euphoric at a time I needed it. One of my favourite bands and I couldn’t not choose it.

Elephant Kind – Scenario II – live

Indonesian band who are beginning to make waves in the UK, saw them live in London last month and they blew my mind. Also as a half-Indonesian am mega proud to see Indonesian musicians getting seen in the UK.

Kwes. – Rye Lane (original score)

Kwes is one of the most inspiring artists I know, feel like everything he does opens my creative mind and this soundtrack is no exception.

Bess Atwell – Sylvester

I love the production and Bess’ voice is so hauntingly lovely. Excited to hear the rest of her new music

The Hives – The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons

I spent much of this year listening to the bands I was into as a teenager and one of them happened to drop this mega energy boost at that exact time.

Playing drums for Helen Ganya at Ypsigrock festival in Sicily. Beautiful place, amazing festival and really great vibes from the audiences and organisers. Hope I get to play there again as Hilang Child.

Visiting Japan for the first time, after years and years of having it on the bucket list. It felt lifechanging.

Mentioned before that I’ve been on a big nostalgia trip for a lot of the year, a big one of those is rediscovering how much I love Green Day. As a kid they were the first band I ever got obsessed with, I remember learning the drums to the whole Dookie album and playing along to it nonstop in my bedroom, probably pissing off my parents and the neighbours. Kept coming back to Dookie this year, so probably that one.

At SXSW I came across this really fun band called Jobber, they play grungy rock and all their songs are professional-wrestling themed. They came onstage to the Stone Cold Steve Austin theme and played wrestling chants through the speakers in-between songs, it was amazing.

Hilang Child, hehehe

I’m releasing a couple more singles in the first few months of the year and finishing up my next album, which I’m really exciting to get done!

Thank you so much! We can’t wait for the new album.
