Rad Releases 23 – Gavin Brown

Our annual end-of-year feature is finally here, the time we enjoy the most where we spend the final two weeks of the year discussing the music that made 2023 special. Our Rad Releases feature is now in its 13th year, and we love sharing the site with musicians, labels, and promoters as we discuss their year in music. We take a personal look back on familiar names’ most loved releases of the past 12 months. It’s a time we enjoy and look forward to, through the contributions we get to find new music discoveries, and releases we may have missed throughout the year.

Our next feature comes from our very own dedicated writer and one of the most hard-working music journalists who has contributed to this site for years now. We are so proud to have Gavin Brown capture such magic from records through our site. Gavin has spent years dedicating his time to reviewing music old and new, covering festivals across the country and interviewing artists worldwide. This year some of the best interviews on Circuit Sweet have been from Gavin, each article shared leaves us in awe, Gavin has this fantastic ability to introduce us to artists who need to be heard too!

We hand over to Gavin to find out about the top releases of 2023….

Top Releases Of 2023

Baroness return with Stone, an album that shows the band at the height of their musical powers and full of the passion and emotion that they are renowned for. Stone is reminiscent of their 2015 masterpiece Purple in terms of the grandeur of the songs but is very much its own entity and sees the band scale new heights with their emotive anthems.

The Weight Of The Mask

Svalbard show exactly why they deserve to be on the ascendance with their latest album, one which elevates them to the upper echelons of heavy music in the UK and demonstrates exactly what makes the band so special with a perfect blend of heaviness and emotional catharsis.

Fucked Up

One Day

Fucked Up always deliver with their music and their sixth full length album One Day is a joyous listen from start to finish. Full of  energetic songs that can’t be described as anything other than life affirming, it was great to hear the band in such fine and fiery form.

Love’s Holiday

Love’s Holiday, the latest album from the mighty Oxbow saw the band deliver a record full of their own takes on love songs  in their own inimitable and unique way on an album that you want to listen again time after time.

Nature Morte

An absolutely gorgeous album from BIG|BRAVE, and you can say you would expect nothing less from the Canadian band, such is their talent for making such fans tasting music. Nature Morte is an all-encompassing album and such a joyous listening experience.

The best show you have attended

Two undisputed hip hop legends in the form of the mighty Wu-Tang Clan and Queens finest Nas joining forces to celebrate the history of rap was as legendary as expected and it felt like a blessing to see them live. It was so legendary that going to see it once was not enough and both performances were something special and showed exactly why both Wu-Tang and Nas are so highly revered.
