Release New Single “Nearly Daffodils” Out via Island Records

Leeds indie frontrunners English Teacher release irresistible new effort ‘Nearly Daffodils’, out now via Island Records, ahead of their biggest UK headline tour to date kicking off later this October.

Marking the follow-up to intoxicating BBC 6 Music-playlisted (A-List) ‘The World’s Biggest Paving Slab’, English Teacher’s remarkable ascent continues to show no boundaries, with their first NME cover feature arriving last month, in addition to widely celebrated slots at Reading & Leeds, Reeperbahn and Green Man Festival.

Detailing their pop-infused new single enigmatic bandleader Lily Fontaine explained: “‘Nearly Daffodils’ is about heartbreak and acceptance of unfulfilled potential. How, no matter how much you may want something, no matter how much effort you may put into something’s growth or development, no matter how beautiful you can envision its fruition; life is a bitch and about as unstoppable as a freight train”.

English Teacher create this rapturous melody that continues to expand and accelerate, adding further friction to the dynamic course of this addictive ensemble. The vocal notes in “Nearly Daffodils” soar above the immense textures and captivating passages and are placed to direct the movement and install further connection for the audience to fixate on. Over the last few years, English Teacher have progressed with this flawless character, continuing to release some of the most complex and remarkable compositions which detail the energy of each musician uniting in this formation.

With acclaimed debut EP ‘Polyawkward’ heralding their extraordinary rise in 2022, English Teacher’s biting social commentary and unique musical soundscapes have certainly positioned the quartet as influential figures within the emerging indie elite. Critical praise throughout the broadsheets (The Guardian, The Times, The Independent, The Sunday Times) and key UK/US indie titans (NME, DIY, Dork, So Young, The FADER, Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan, Rolling Stone UK, Loud & Quiet, The Line Of Best Fit, Clash, Gigwise), as well as on the BBC Radio 1 (Jack Saunders, Gemma Bradley), BBC 6 Music (Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne) and Apple Music (Elton John) airwaves has enhanced their profile significantly; whilst on the live circuit the group have already supported acts including Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Paolo Nutini, Parquet Courts and Yard Act, in addition to notable debut slots at SXSW and Glastonbury.

Having concluded their summer festival dates, English Teacher will be hitting the road again this month for their biggest UK run to date, including an eagerly anticipated hometown show at Leeds’ Brudenell Social Club, and London headliner at the iconic Scala.

Produced by Marta Salgoni (Bjork, Black Midi, Animal Collective), English Teacher’s ‘Nearly Daffodils’ is out now via Island Records and available on all digital platforms.

English Teacher is Lily Fontaine (vocals, rhythm guitar, synth), Douglas Frost (drums, vocals), Nicholas Eden (bass), Lewis Whiting (lead guitar)
