Album ‘The Good Life’ out August 11th on BMG

Vienna-based trio My Ugly Clementine share a third cut from their forthcoming celebration of friendship and change, album ‘The Good Life’, out on the 11th of August via BMG. Following the bouncing grunge-pop of “Are You In” and jubilant appreciation of doing sweet-FA, “Feet Up,” the new single “Would Do It Again” is a laid-back, summery ode to self-acceptance and trusting in one’s own decisions.

“Is the path I’m taking the right one? Should I have done this or that differently?” These are questions we all regularly ask ourselves. On “Would Do It Again”, My Ugly Clementine break free from the self-questioning, harmonising over the refrain “I know that I would do it again – I know – I would do it – I would do it”, encouraging all of us to do the same.

The accompanying video was made by Hauer & Paya and shot at Donauinsel in Vienna last month, echoing the sentiment of friendship and living in the moment.

A deeply infectious and commanding release with this feel-good enthusiasm bursting from the tonality and the robust rhythms. Even with the intimacy of the lyrics and the emotive push that comes from the harmonies, there is a real serious tone with the words but the delivery assists with this consuming atmosphere that in turn controls the listener’s own mood and pushes this elevated nostalgic emphasis on the audience. One of the most striking single releases to be unveiled, it carries such a sentiment yet the hooks of the instrumentation provide the ultimate addictive quality for this vision.

My Ugly Clementine comprises of three visionaries from Vienna’s thriving music scene – Sophie Lindinger, Mira Lu Kovacs, and Nastasja Ronck. While Lindinger is also part of the acclaimed pop duo Leyya, guitarist Mira Lu Kovacs is a successful solo musician and songwriter and Ronck also plays with Austrian indie heavy-weights Sharktank. Following the 2020 release of My Ugly Clementine’s debut album ‘Vitamin C,’ the band have performed at various renowned festivals across Europe including Primavera Sound (Barcelona), Reeperbahn Festival (Hamburg), and Eurosonic (Groningen), as well as winning the prestigious Impala Album of the Year Award. More recently, My Ugly Clementine opened as Special Guests during Parcel’s European Tour 2022.

Most of the recording sessions for new album ‘The Good Life’ took place in a remote house somewhere in the Beskid Mountains, far away from civilization. “All we did was cook, write, and record.” There were rumours of bears in that part of the Czech Republic. “The house was located on a slope. It was the last in a line of buildings, so the giant woods opened up right next to it. Standing on that threshold was quite a special feeling.”

The album title is full of ambiguities: On the one hand, it’s about the band as a collective, providing community, about the group as a means to get closer to that Good Life, a joint effort to make dreams and visions come true. Yet, on the other hand, it’s also about new phases of life unfolding, about things that have changed for the better – moving on.

‘The Good Life’ will be released on August 11th via BMG.
