Iceland sensation Arny Margret will release her luscious new EP, ‘dinner alone’, on September 22nd via One Little Independent Records. The singer-songwriter encompasses folk, indie, and an introspective style characterized by her heartfelt and personal approach. Here, Arny uses rich, intimate instrumentation to delve further into themes of self-reflection and existentialism.

New material that features on the four track EP marks both a sonic and emotional shift for Arny. Where previous work consisted of shrouded and picturesque storytelling, delivered in hushed tones and an acoustic fragility, new songs explore a more direct approach. Lyrically there’s a comfort and confidence that’s been found in complete candour.

New single ‘i went outside’ blends her contemplative trademark poeticism with dreamy layers of acoustic ambience. Ethereal textures come together to weave a delicate ballad that’s both compelling and profound.

She says that “the EP is different to anything I’ve done, I push my voice more, I scream at one point. dinner alone the song was the first I’ve actually written broadly on piano. One of the tracks is so short, without a chorus or anything, it wasn’t the normal way you’d expect to make a song. One is played with a full band. So it’s fuller, but it’s also much rawer. Through all the tracks on the EP, I think it’s about figuring something out about myself. A lot of them are about me and how I am as a person, and what I do.”

The intricate guitar notes picked to stir this compelling formation, immediately sculpt this sincere soundscape, joined with delicate and elongated tones, cutting the landscape with an emphasis on the immersive atmosphere. Whilst Margret’s volatile harmonies explore the raw lyrics and add this emotive touch to the composition. Arny continues on this fragile adventure and the lyrics enthrall but it’s the remarkable expressive nature of the vocal melodies which consume the listener and create this striking arrangement. Throughout the composition, Arny and the audience can embrace such heartfelt notions.

Vulnerability and a capacity to pen vivid narratives have always been evident in what she does, and ‘dinner alone’ is another step in an enticing direction as she hones and perfects this skill. There’s a sense that within these pieces Arny is sharing a cathartic frankness, getting in touch with her feelings on another level, before crafting them into their poetic final form. These are for her first, and us second.
The EP artwork was photographed by fellow Icelandic artist and musician Prins Póló aka Svavar Pétur Eysteinsson, who tragically passed away last September. He founded alternative rock band Skakkamanage in the mid-2000s, was part of the bands Rúnk and Múldýrið, and enjoyed a successful solo career. Arny Margret has been making waves not only in her Icelandic hometown but across Europe and the US, touring extensively, supporting Leif Vollebekk, Passenger, Blake Mills, Ásgeir and more, as well as playing the likes of SXSW, The Great Escape, Newport Folk Festival, Reykjavik Calling, and Iceland Airwaves. Her gorgeous debut album, ‘they only talk about the weather’ was released in October 2022.
She cites influences from the likes of Andy Shauf, Phoebe Bridgers, Bon Iver and Gregory Alan Isakov. Born and raised in a small town called Ísafjörður, she attended music school from the age of 6 learning to play the piano and gradually taught herself guitar. She recorded at studio Hljóðriti in Hafnarfjörður and continues to make her mark globally with her intimate and affecting live performances.
