End Of The Road Festival 2023
(31st August – 3rd September at the Larmer Tree Gardens, Dorset/Wiltshire)
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Future Islands, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Wilco Announced as Headliners
Plus Angel Olsen, Ezra Furman, Arooj Aftab, Greentea Peng and more
Having triumphantly brought another festival season to a close, End Of The Road Festival are gearing up to make 2023 their most special yet. Tipped as the UK’s most ‘imaginative and exploratory festival of the summer’ by The Independent, and described as offering ‘a genuine alternative’ by The Guardian, End Of The Road is thrilled to announce its incredible 2023 lineup
Undisputed kings of neo-psychedelia, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard willbring their whirling, experimental sounds to the main stage, returning to End Of The Road for the first time since their explosive set in 2016. Revered fuzzy psychedelic pop four-piece Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Baltimore-based pervasive synth-pop disruptors Future Islands are sure to have crowds dancing along to their headline performances. Masterful country-adjacent indie rock icons and Grammy Award winners Wilco will headline the Thursday night. Indie singer-songwriter favourite Angel Olsen will return to End Of The Road 10 years after her last performance, Olsen’s full-blooded live show will feature material from across her six studio albums that culminates in ‘Big Time’.
With this year’s edition being the fastest selling yet, there are a very limited number of tickets available. Boasting a diverse and exciting lineup, this first announcement of names offers music fans the prospect of both seeing their favourite act and discovering the next big thing.
Also on this year’s stellar lineup is Ezra Furman whose incendiary music soundtracked the hit Netflix show Sex Education and whose album ‘All Of Us Flames’ was one of last year’s highlights. Trailblazing Pakistani composer Arooj Aftab will introduce her Grammy-winning ambient jazz to the festival.
Greentea Peng’sdebut ‘Man Made’ -a collection of blissed-out, dub-inflected psychedelia set the South Londoner out as one of the UK’s most exciting new artists and her anticipated performance at End Of The Road will undoubtedly be a highlight. Fellow South-Londoner and much hyped MC Flohio, will be making her festival debut this year following a non-stop 2022.
There’s plenty of electronic music on offer in 2023; having recently announced their highly anticipated debut album, Overmono will supply crowd-pleasing, late night energy to the festival. Incorporating elements of glitch and ambient electronica to their post-pop oeuvre, Singaporean newcomer yeule is an exciting addition to the lineup.
There is also a strong presence of progressive, folk-leaning songwriters on this year’s bill including poetic country-pop icon Cass McCombs and genre-defying balladry from theup-and-coming alt-folk collective Caroline.
Fans of post-punk that leans into the avant-garde will have plenty to feed on, Horse Lords will be bringing their hypnotic, pulsating grooves to Larmer Tree Gardens and, hotly tipped for success this year, London trio bar italia – who make guitar driven music that has been labelled by The Times as “languid to the point of catatonic” – will return to End Of The Road having been a word-of-mouth sensation at last year’s festival.
For the adventurous listener, End Of The Road will host experimental music in all incarnations: radical electronic music collective KOKOKO! from Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, South London’s blistering electronic trio PVA, as well as Baltimore’s hip-hop experimentalists Infinity Knives & Brian Ennals whose album King Cobra was named Album Of The Year in Loud & Quiet. Other jazz-adjacent performers include multi-instrumentalist Donna Thompson, and avant-garde cellist Mabe Fratti.
Festival founder Simon Taffe on booking the 2023 edition: “This year’s lineup excites me beyond words. I feel so lucky to be able to bring my record collection to life!
“King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Future Islands, Angel Olsen, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Ezra Furman have put on some of my favourite live performances over the years and more recently Arooj Aftab, Greentea Peng and John Francis Flynn have blown me away.
“End of the Road is all about discovery, and I can’t wait to welcome a whole load of amazing new acts that have never played before like Biig Piiig, Flohio, Floodlights, Horse Lords, Infinity Knives & Brain Ennals, Moin, They Hate Change and a lot more!
“As always we will be doing everything we can to make it the best year yet, with plenty of surprises to come …”
With the biggest ever crowd in attendance, 2022’s edition of End Of The Road cemented its reputation as the “UK’s most exciting and diverse medium-sized festival” (★★★★★ The Guardian). The late night Boat Stage returns for its second year with the finest experimental music this side of Cafe Oto; another treat for revellers wandering through the enchanting woods of The Effing Forest, where secret shows and beautifully crafted art installations can be found. End of The Road continues to give festival-goers an experience like no other, and is sure to be filled with even more magic in 2023.
