Rad Releases 22 – Ynys

Our annual end-of-year feature is finally here, we spend the final two weeks of the year discussing the music that made 2022 special. Our special Rad Releases feature is now 12 years old and we love sharing the site with musicians, labels, and promoters as we discuss their year in music. We take a personal look back on familiar names’ most loved releases of the past 12 months. It’s a time we enjoy and look forward to, through the contributions we get to find new music discoveries, and releases we may have missed throughout the year.

Next up is an artist who last month released one of the most stunning self-titled debuts. Back in November YNYS dropped this flawless record one that quickly became one of our most cherished, the record is out now via Libertino Records. YNYS is the solo outing of Welsh songwriter Dylan Hughes, previously known for the psychedelic pop band Race Horses. We are delighted to chat to Dylan to discover more on the records that made the year so special.

Top 5 Releases & Reason

Wesley Gonzalez – Wax Limousine

3rd album from Wesley released in March. I’ve always been a fan, and this record is no exception.  The song writing is great as always, and this record is quite personal. Sonically, with the pop piano and synths it’s right up my street – upbeat, catchy, and melancholic.

Gwenno – Tresor

Mercury nominated album that is likely to feature on many end-of-year lists. I think that Tresor is my favourite Gwenno album – the sound and production draw you into a mysterious world. One of my favourite albums of the year.

Georgia Ruth – Kingfisher EP

A fellow Aberystwyth artist – I really enjoyed this EP. The guitar parts remind me in parts of Paul Simon. I got to see Georgia with the live band this year (Theatr y Werin, Aberystwyth) which was great.

Elis Derby – Breuddwyd y Ffŵl

Breuddwyd y Ffŵl (The Fool’s Dream) came out in July – an indie pop record with some great hooks and songs. The solo on ‘Gin, Tonic a iâ’ is a personal highlight – I must try and get in touch with them to find out how that was recorded. Reminded me of Andy Shauf.

Sunglasses For Jaws – For Another Day (Single)

Came out a couple of weeks ago. I don’t know much (anything) about this band/artist, but a great song with cinematic strings weaving in and out of verses. Top single.

Best Show you’ve attended / played

Confession time – except for gigs where Ynys was playing, I’m not sure if I’ve attended a whole lot of  gigs/festivals this year. We supported Melin Melyn in Cardiff in March, they were great, as were the amazing HMS Morris the other weekend (Swansea – Bunkhouse). Also, Georgia Ruth in Aberystwyth (May 2022) was special.

My favourite Ynys show is either at the National Eisteddfod (Cymdeithas yr Iaith) or at the Coopers Arms (Aberystwyth) last month. The crowd was great at both, and I think we played ok!

Your own highlight of the year

It can only be one thing really – releasing the debut album. After quite a long time of recording, mixing, and mastering, it was special to be able to hold the vinyl and release it to the world. Returning to playing live after lockdowns etc was lovely, and we’re going around the place as a 6 piece now, which is both sonically and logistically complex!

Records that have got you through the year

El Goodo – Susan & Bill

Track 8 off their 2017 Album By Order of the Moose. One of those songs that I wish I’d written. Always stops me in my tracks whenever I hear it.

Wesley Gonzales – A Taste of Something New

Track 7 off the 2022 Album ‘Wax Limousine’. I love the lyrics and the melody is top draw. Apple Music informs me that this was my most played track of 2022.

James Righton – Empty Rooms (feat. Benny Andersson)

From another great 2022 album. There’s something understated about this song but very catchy as one would expect in a collaboration with Benny Andersson.

Best musical discovery

Artist/Band for 2023

I’m excited for new releases by … Hyll, HMS Morris, Tara Bandito, H.Hawkline and hopefully Meilyr Jones 👀.

Plans for New Year
I’m not one for new year plans really – at home I would imagine. Sorry, that’s a really dull answer

Thank you so much! With your album on repeat, it will see us through to 2023!
