Rad Releases 22 – Church Road Records

Our annual end-of-year feature is finally here, we spend the final two weeks of the year discussing the music that made 2022 special. Our special Rad Releases feature is now 12 years old and we love sharing the site with musicians, labels, and promoters as we discuss their year in music. We take a personal look back on familiar names’ most loved releases of the past 12 months. It’s a time we enjoy and look forward to, through the contributions we get to find new music discoveries, and releases we may have missed throughout the year.

Our next take-over comes from Justine at Church Road Records. This label has been consistently releasing and promoting some influential records this year has introduced us to new music from No Sun, Outlander, and Graywave to name a few, next year they’ve already got us extremely excited about the new OHHMS record too. We hand over to Justine to find out more about the records that made 2022.

  • Top Releases Of 2022

Show Me the Body ‘Trouble the Water’

I was pretty late to the game with this band, I listened to their single ‘Loose Talk’ on the Roadburn playlist when it came out and I’ve been hooked on this album ever since.

Bonobo ‘Fragments’

There is not one album from this guy I dislike. I would go as far to say he’s a generational talent. This album is my go to when I have a big chunk of emails to get through

Alex G – God Save the Animals

This record has some of the most interesting song writing I’ve heard in a long time, I’ve been absolutely hooked from the first listen. ‘God Save the Animals’ is not in the slightest bit formulaic either. Just when you think you’ve got the record sussed, the next track takes you somewhere completely different.

Militarie Gun All Roads Lead to the Gun

You can hear influence of post-hardcore legends such as Lungfish and Fugazi on this record, but Militarie Gun have they’re own unique snarl when it comes to the genre. This album also has tracks featuring MSPAINT and Woolworm that add a whole other element to the sonics of the record.

Regulate – S/T

This has probably been my favourite hardcore record of the year! It rages, but there’s also light and shade to some of the songs, it’s not just one dynamic throughout the record. I also love how overtly positive the record is too. I can always get behind that.

  • The best show you have attended

This is kind of cheating as it’s a festival, but it was Roadburn for me. It was my first proper festival back after covid and it felt so special seeing all of the acts this year because of that.

  • Has there been any record that’s got you through this year?

This is one from last year (my AOTY 2021 in fact) but that’s Ovlov ‘Buds’. Every time I’ve been feeling in a ‘meh’ mood this year I’ve stuck that album on

  • Best discovery this year?

Discord! I finally got with the times and set one up for the label, it’s been a wicked way to keep on top of all of the new music out there and nerd out about merch and shows 🙂

  • Label Highlight of 2022

Seeing how many of our bands played Arctangent this year, so stoked to have such a strong presence at such a great festival

  • Artist/Band to watch for 2023

Anything we release ;), all jokes aside… we do love all of the artists we work with so it’s always worth following our new releases playlist on Spotify or joining our Discord server to keep on top of everything.

  • Label Plans for the New Year

Celebrate a wicked 2022 and start prepping for 2023… which is set to be our biggest year as a label yet!

Thank you so much, we can’t wait for more Church Road Records discoveries for the new year
