Lucy Dacus Covers Cher’s “Believe” and Reworks “Partner In Crime” for Spotify Singles

Last year, Lucy Dacus released Home Videoher third studio album on Matador and “her most intimate and deliberately personal work to date” (T: The New York Times Style Magazine). Today, fresh off her performance at Pitchfork Music Festival, Dacus unveils her contribution to the Spotify Singles series: a reworked studio rendition of Home Video standout ‘Partner in Crime’ and a cover of Cher’s ‘Believe’, a “huge, expansive, beautiful, heart-pumping, excitement-inducing song,” says Dacus, and “iconic for its use of auto-tune.” Despite this distinct use of auto-tune in both ‘Believe’ and the original ‘Partner in Crime’, Dacus’ new versions remove the auto-tune and scale back the production, bringing each songwriter’s prowess to the forefront.

“I feel like some of my favorite lyrics that I’ve written are in ‘Partner in Crime’ and maybe they aren’t as noticeable because the effect takes you out of it a little bit,” Dacus says. “So, I just wanted to strip it bare and showcase the song for what it is without any tricky production move. ‘Partner in Crime’ was partially inspired by ‘Believe’, so I thought it’d be nice to pair them together. I love Cher’s voice and how low it gets. The timbre of her voice is so unique, you can recognize it anywhere. Even with the autotune, you can tell that it’s Cher and nobody else. But, on our cover, taking away the autotune, I feel like you can tell that the structure of the song is very special and I did feel myself accidentally wanting to become Cher when I was doing vocal takes. It could never happen, but I love a low voiced pop legend.”

Believe” is such a powerful rendition, you’ll be hooked on the affectionate arrangement in which Lucy brings her emotional reach to the cover.

Dacus’ Spotify Single follows ‘Kissing Lessons’, a Home Video B-side released earlier this year alongside a full-band rendition of fan-favorite ‘Thumbs’. Dacus returns to the UK for festival slots at All Points East on August 26th and End Of The Road Festival on September 4th. She is currently on the road supporting Home Video in ths US, including tomorrow’s performance at New York’s Summerstage in Central Park and Newport Folk Fest this weekend. She has announced 20+ more shows throughout the autumn in North America. Full dates are listed below and tickets are on sale now.
