Following the release of their hypnagogic new album Regards Bogusław Schaeffer, and a series of sold out shows in the UK and Europe, prolific sonic agitators Matmos have shared the new video for “Tonight there is something special about the moon / Jaki księżyc dziś wieczór…”. Created by the band, their approach making the video mirrors that of making the album, taking unusual source material and transmuting it into strange new shapes, grainy neon footage evolving in time with the track’s jagged alien rhythms and futurist bombast.

Drew Daniel elaborates: “The primary source of visual imagery is processed video feedback using a cascade of digital and analogue video processing gear. Additional footage was shot inside our house, and inside the mouth of our friend David Serrotte using a tiny  lighting rig placed on his tongue. M.C. Schmidt took the Polish texts sourced from Boguslaw Schaeffer’s work ‘Monodram (Monodrama)” and ran them through multiple generations of subtitling software and automated Polish-to-English translation. Thus, the video embraces various levels of “lossy” process that lose original signal but add new signal. While the video is abstract, its techniques are examples of the same process that created the whole album: you adapt source material in ways that transform its meaning.”

Matmos’ practice of creative constraint has made them one of the most consistently exciting acts in electronic music. Having assembled 99 collaborators for their previous album The Consuming Flame, on their new album Baltimore-based electronic duo Matmos focus upon just one person: Polish polymath Bogusław Schaeffer. Celebrated for his genre bending boundless creativity Poland’s Schaeffer innovated for decades across the boundaries of classical composition, electronic experimentation, and radical theater in playful form-breaking ways. The album itself is a musical re-assemblage of component parts into possible but unforeseen new shapes, constantly toying with scale and shifting from the close-mic-ing of ASMR and the intimacy of chamber music to the immensity of processed drones and oceanic field-recordings that close the album.

A mighty video capturing the intricacies of this explosive ensemble. Layers upon layers of immense elements, experimental tweaks, and soaring synth sounds build these deep passages. The textures of this exploration so crisp and cosmic.
