Mister Goblin has never been a project to waste any time. Set to release new album, Bunny, on April 22nd via Exploding In Sound Records (Ovlov, Pile, Floatie), the record is their fourth in five years. While those albums were essentially the solo project of Sam Goblin (Two Inch Astronaut), Bunny finds the group expanded to a trio.

Having moved from Maryland to Bloomington during the pandemic, this album was recording in Chicago with Seth Engel (Options) and Aaron O’Neill (Cumbie) playing drums and bass, respectively. At times it’s the heaviest Mister Goblin has sounded, recalling Sam’s past with Two Inch Astronaut, while keeping the songwriting humorous and observant. Bunny is also built with sparse and sensitive recordings, the type that mix wry emotion and melodic hooks. The trio are joined by guests and frequent collaborators Sadie Dupuis (Speedy Ortiz/Sad13), Matt Gatwood (Two Inch Astronaut), K Nkanza (Sping Silver), and Andrew Krull to create the most dynamic and immediate songs of Sam’s career.

“Holiday World” is the album’s first single, a gorgeous song packed with humor and the disorienting feelings that came from a world built by algorithms. Brooklyn Vegan described it as “a breezy, ’90s-style indie rock song before exploding into a grungy post-hardcore climax.” Speaking about the song, Sam Goblin shared:

There’s a theme park called Holiday World located in (I kid you not) Santa Claus, Indiana. It’s basically split up into sections of the park that have different holiday themes. Lyrically the song is about the power of the algorithm being so absolute to the point where it’s impossible to tell what we really like, and relating that to what I imagine the very curated experience of being at Holiday World.”

The new single will hook you immediately, filled with vibrant bright chords and this forcible nostalgic power which oozes across the entire exploration. “Holiday World” transitions from calmer passages to full, robust routes. When the scratchy guitar melds with the timing of the crushing stop-starts, the energy excels. Mister Goblin once again lets this raw tonality shine throughout the complex, punk-infused ensemble. As the single fades out, the audience awakens from this hypnotic state they’ve been in fixated throughout the entire mesmic journey.

The band are headed down to Austin for SXSW, with a handful of midwest and southern dates along the way.
