Matthew Doty aka Deserta is sharing his new single, “Where Did You Go” (featuring vocals from Mice Parade’s Caroline Lufkin) which arrives as another piece from his forthcoming album, Every Moment, Everything You Need – out via Felte on February 25 (vinyl release moved to June 10). The new single follows the recently released singles, “I’m So Tired,” “Goodbye Vista” and “Lost in the Weight” which found fans at Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan, FLOOD, KEXP, NPR (Viking’s Choice) and more. Doty will support the release with a run of US dates – listed below – with more to be announced shortly.

Swirling passages sweep across the complex and mighty landscape before the ardent and bold drum beat kicks in and bring with it a ramp in the intensity being explored throughout the ensemble. The experimental, ethereal vocal harmonies lace the decadent structure, complimenting the sonically alluring soundscape. Deserta delivers another flawless release maximized on each level, oozing affection and sincerity whilst allowing the expressive power to emerge and travel with the audience upon their journey from start to finish. As always, sensational tones, intensive bursts, and ethereal vocal melodies.

Mixed by David Fridmann (Tame Impala, MGMT, Flaming Lips, Mogwai), engineered by Chris Coady (TV On The Radio, Amen Dunes, Slowdive) with drums provided by James McAliser (collaborations include Taylor Swift, Sufjan Stevens, Bryce Dessner, The National, Big Red Machine, et al). “Where Did You Go” marks another example of Doty’s sweeping shoegaze and ability to layer rich textures, this time with the additional vocals of Caroline Lufkin (Mice Parade).

When discussing the new single, Doty explains: “‘Where Did You Go’ marks the third time Caroline and I have worked together. Going back to 2008, Oliver Chapoy (who also appears on the new Deserta album) and I contributed a remix for her album, Murmurs. The following year Caroline sang on Saxon Shore’s “This Place” (also produced/mixed by Dave Fridmann). We kept in touch over the years, always trying to connect on something new, but life happens and timing is often hard to get right. With the unpredictability of the last year, I think it was comforting to finally reconnect with some of my favorite collaborators, even from a distance.”

Doty’s time as part of the Philadelphia-based post-rock group, Saxon Shore found him release five albums and an EP, founding the group with former bandmate, Josh Tillman (Father John Misty). Since then, he went on to form Midnight Faces, earning acclaim at SPIN, The AV Club, Consequence, VICE and more before releasing solo material under the Deserta moniker in 2020.
