Following the news that of their new album ‘Becoming Undone’ will be released on February 25th via Dais Records (vinyl to land on March 11th), synth punk trailblazers ADULT. have shared a second single from the record, entitled “I Am Nothing”. The Detroit-based duo have also announced North American and European tour dates throughout the first half of 2022.

After a quarter century of nearly nonstop activity, ADULT. have perfected a strain of stylistic cohesion in the album format, “but for this we wanted something that’s falling apart.” ‘Becoming Undone’, the ninth official full-length by co-founders Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller, explicitly succeeds in this aim, simultaneously rejecting and reflecting the planetary discord that inspired it. The album bristles with strident acidic revolt and black leather sequential circuits. Unhinged and unforgiving, it might be ADULT.’s most non-conformant yet.

Today, following previous single “Fools (We Are…),” they reveal new cut “I Am Nothing”. Formed on a diet of Detroit Techno circa 92-95, Alan Vega (Suicide), Micheal Gira (Swans) and Gundrun Gut (Malaria!), the track ripples with an exhilarating sharp dissonance.

The band comment: “After having an advanced listen of this song with a friend, she commented that we [ADULT.] have a healthy acceptance of destruction. Our feelings regarding current music and creative output is this; we are not interested to hear happy fucking albums during a global pandemic. Some may wish to escape the inescapable, but we don’t. Let’s get to the core of the human condition and break it down. The meaning of ‘nothing’ in the context of this song is not in regards to worthlessness, but of being lodged into something we can not understand and yet somehow accept it, or not accept it. We are collectively living in liminality, and personally we are more content currently to be in a state of nothingness.”

ADULT. just create the most intoxicating atmospheres’ and their latest single once again showcases this wild and hypnotizing world that draws the audience into the fierce journey where they stay, amazed at the depth of the exploration. These obscure and obsessive currents loop and add such a compelling texture to the track. Immediately, intense yet jagged synth notes emerge and start to sculpt the passages which lead to that immersive gritty atmosphere whilst the disco beats lighten the load. The vocal melodies bring attitude to the center of the intense instrumentation. The piercing tones allow for this almighty transition with the flow of this ensemble. A truly mesmeric creation.

The making of ‘Becoming Undone’ began in the latter half of 2020 against a backdrop of unprecedented flux and seismic isolation, the duo kickstarted their muse by sourcing fresh additions to the rig: a vocal loop pedal for Kuperus and Roland percussion pads for Miller. Reconnecting with legacy influences like the politicized industrial percussion of Test Department and the queasy miscreant synthetics of TG’s 20 Jazz Funk Greats sparked a series of fruitfully frenetic sessions, centred on themes of impermanence and dissonance. Miller’s rationale is blunt: “We weren’t interested in melody or harmony since we didn’t see the world having that.”

The album is also freighted with a more personal pain, as Kuperus’ father passed away during the height of the pandemic, just before the album took root. As his hospice caretakers, she and Miller faced the banality of finality, surrounded by objects drained of meaning, “the joy of having a body, but also the drudgery of having one.”

From technoid blitzes to slower tempos of purgatorial unravelling, ‘Becoming Undone’ showcases a breadth of vocal FX. Kuperus at times sounds alternately indignant and possessed, decrying the crimes, fears, and failings of a deluded world. Throughout, the band’s chemistry crackles with revulsion and strobe-lit dissent, equal parts exorcism and denunciation. “Humans have always been pretty terrible,” Kuperus explains. “But every year the compromises of culture just accelerate.”

‘Becoming Undone’ sees its release via Dais Records across all digital platforms on February 25, 2022. Vinyl and CD formats will be available in stores worldwide on March 11. Pre-order here.
