Low Girl is one of the most impressive artists to emerge in recent years, having been writing songs for years, it’s clear that the forthcoming second EP from the Hemel-Hempstead-based artist will define this artists’ career and set their long-lasting impressive musical path.
New single “So Cool” is the title track from the upcoming EP which is due for release March 4th. The track is described as another irresistible piece of alt-pop from the Hemel-Hempstead based newcomer and is the follow up to 2021’s much-hyped single ‘Big Now’, which was playlisted by BBC 6Music and picked up support from BBC Radio 1, DIY Magazine and Radio X.
The lyrics of the single find Low Girl continue the themes found across her debut EP, feelings of loneliness, self-worth, mental health and the constant trials and struggles of finding one’s identity growing up. Specifically, in this case the experience of wanting someone seemingly unattainable, as Low Girl explains
“There was a girl I liked who really knew how to switch it on and off, flirting and then recoiling. I’d end up feeling pretty disorientated, trying to maintain some sense of composure and resolve but failing miserably. I knew none of it was good for me, but my tendency to be self-destructive made it inevitable.”
The new single allows this diverse collision of upbeat pop elements with a sincere and tender lyrical course. Allowing this volatile, raw theme to emerge through the delicate vocal harmonies that find a place amongst these dazzling tones and immersive notes. “So Cool” is a hypnotic, thoughtful, and melodic masterpiece.
Hypnotizing rhythms and big beats envelop the audience as Low Girl manipulates the sweeter landscape with its powerful lyrics and heartfelt delivery. Low Girl’s ethereal voice floats with ease across this sonically alluring landscape. The instrumentation dynamically shifts throughout gaining further intensity, unpredictable stop-starts, and a very impressive build-up of layers all support the complex yet expressive ensemble. Fierce with lashes of melancholia seeping through the mammoth peaks.
The single has such a lasting influence, you’ll find yourself needing to be elevated from the crushing composition and hitting repeat as soon as the single finishes.
With a slot already confirmed at SXSW, a support tour with Pom Poko and a run of headline dates in February and March, 2022 is firmly shaping up to be Low Girl’s year.
