Rad Releases 21 – THOT
For the final week 2 weeks of the year, as the countdown to the end of 2021 approaches, we take a personal look back on familiar names, labels, promoters, and musicians’ most loved releases of the past 12 months. It’s a time we enjoy and look forward to, through the contributions we get to find new music discoveries, releases we may have missed throughout the year. When we handed the site over last year for the 2020 feature, our 10th year into our annual special, we loved the contributions and it became apparent that we all found ourselves reconnecting with music new and old. Following another challenging year, the one constant has been how artists and their labels have adapted and produced some of the best records of our time, it’s those releases that fans have depended on to get them through another year.
Now in its 11th year, we are delighted to hand the site over once more, as we let our favourites share more details about their year in music.
This year we’ve been captivated by the work of Belgian industrial noise/post-rock outfit Thot , the band have had a triumphant year for music, including a new single which dropped a week ago – “𝘌𝘜𝘗𝘏𝘙𝘈𝘛𝘌“, and the outfit celebrated the 10 year anniversary release for their impeccable record “Obscured By The Wind”. Thot have already announced their forthcoming EP release to see them through the spring of 2022. We are delighted to speak with Grégoire to find out more about his year in music..
- Top releases of the year
Rival Consoles – Overflow
(soundtrack of my autumn)
Black Country New Road – For the First Time
(surprisingly crazy)
La Battue – Get Set, Go!
(sweet discovery in the middle of a podcast I was listening on french radio)
Stephan Bodzin – Boavista
(perfect when riding my bike across the city)
Genghis Tron – Dream Weapon
(unexpected comeback)
- The best show you have played this year / gig attended
Haven’t played a normal show this year besides the 15 minutes live sessions I do on Instagram every Sunday. I haven’t been to many shows either but my fav was the young and sweet french songwriter Lou.K playing a show in a secret place in Brussels, back in April. Felt like a relief.
- Your own highlight of the year
Going to Bulgaria and recording with famous polyphonic choir The Mystery of The Bulgarian Voices, last touch to THOT’s new album. The next day, I was swimming in the Black Sea and felt like nothing else was important.
- Has there been any record that’s got you through this year?
“For This We Fought The Battle of Ages” by the very missed Subrosa. Well, I have never listened to them until a few months ago and their music popped in my ears at the right time.
- How have you adapted with releasing/recording/promoting this year?
Our trip to Bulgaria wasn’t easy to schedule due to Covid19, so we always had to postpone the recording with the choir, and then, the mixing of our new material.
- Best discovery this year?
A forgotten 50 euros note under the carpet in my living room.
- Artist/Band to watch for 2022
The cool dudes in CERE https://wearecere.bandcamp.com/
- Plans for the New Year
Finding a vaccine against intolerance.
Very much looking forward to the release of Méandres in February! Thank you for spending time with Circuit Sweet and we can’t wait for more from THOT
