Rad Releases 21 – Teddy Hunter

For the final week 2 weeks of the year, as the countdown to the end of 2021 approaches, we take a personal look back on familiar names, labels, promoters, and musicians’ most loved releases of the past 12 months. It’s a time we enjoy and look forward to, through the contributions we get to find new music discoveries, releases we may have missed throughout the year. When we handed the site over last year for the 2020 feature, our 10th year into our annual special, we loved the contributions and it became apparent that we all found ourselves reconnecting with music new and old. Following another challenging year, the one constant has been how artists and their labels have adapted and produced some of the best records of our time, it’s those releases that fans have depended on to get them through another year.

Now in its 11th year, we are delighted to hand the site over once more, as we let our favourites share more details about their year in music.

Our next feature comes from Cardiff-based audio-visual artist Teddy Hunter. A name that we’ve loved to see feature on one particular event billboard this year and an artist we’ve featured throughout the year with new videos and the most promising news. Teddy Hunter crafts deeply atmospheric landscapes which is undeniably thought-provoking and we are in awe over Teddy’s vision. Teddy was shortlisted and later won the place to showcase their sublime musical efforts at this year’s Green Man Festival as part of Green Man Rising, we are thrilled to hear more about Teddy’s year in music…

· Top Releases of the year

Yann Tiersen – Ker al Loch (album)

I’ve been listening to Yann Tiersen’s music since I was very young, and he inspires a lot of the music that I create and so I was super excited when this album was released. Sonically it is just beautiful, how he integrates electronic instrumentation with piano, I could listen to it all day every day.

Melin Melyn – Blomonj (album)

These guys are just so much fun to watch and their album is equally fun to listen to as well! Might be a little bit biased as they are good friends of mine but I genuinely just love this album and reminds me of such a great summer I had this year!

Samantha Crain- I Guess We Live Here Now (album)

Samantha Crain has an amazing voice and the instrumentation on this album is really moving. The song Bloomsday in particular reminds me of summer, prepping our installation at End of the Road and then making our road trip down to Lamar Tree Gardens. Definitely a great road trip song!

Llyr – Biome (album)

This is such an incredible album. How Llyr explores electronic and natural sounds is something that interests me a lot and is really relevant to my current research. These sonic interrogations are intelligent and take you to what feels like another planet, it can definitely be quite mesmerizing at times. Everything about this release I can really appreciate – the visual identity, the sounds – it’s all just beautifully put together.

Ah Gee Be – Cocoona (single)

I’ve listened to this on repeat since it came out in November. I absolutely LOVE it! I have always been in awe of Rhodri’s sound and his songwriting, can’t wait to hear more releases!

· The best show you have played this year / gig attended

I don’t think anything will be able top performing on the Mountain Stage at Green Man Festival this year! I’ve been going to Green Man for a few years and it is such a special festival for me so to be able to play on a stage that has seen so many amazing artists was unbelievable. It was THE most magical show I’ve ever played and it will stay with me for a long time. The sun was out, the crowd were so kind, and I was really lucky to be able to share this experience with my incredibly talented band. I also have to thank everyone who voted and supported me along that journey, it means a lot.

· Your own highlight of the year

Haha! This also would have to be Green Man but if I was to choose another highlight it would have to be that we are currently recording aspect of my album in a temple. There will be more information about it when it comes out, but it is quite exciting to be recording in real spaces and bring elements of buildings and space into the music. Very very exciting!

· Has there been any record that’s got you through this year?

There have been a couple of records that have helped to ground myself this year Olafur Arnolds Some Kind of Peace and rewatching/listening to Talking Heads Stop Making Sense. It has been quite a whirlwind of a year for me this year, more than I ever expected it would be. These two albums have helped me to focus on what I’m doing and have got me through some rough patches during lockdown.

· How have you adapted with releasing/recording/promoting this year?

For me, I’ve seen it as taking a year out from the pressures of releasing and promoting and have just focussed on recording. In lockdown I realised that I was living quite a hectically busy life and had rarely found any time for myself. My perspective now is that this recording period is time for me to have some time for myself and make something I am really proud of away from all the pressures around a release. I’ll think about all that stuff later.

· Best discovery this year?

I came across Kali Malone’s work only quite recently. She is a really interesting artist and her music has changed how I think about drone and durational music. I particularly love her The Sacrificial Code album. It’s a very slow paced, beautiful album rich in harmonic texture all recorded on a pipe organ. Definitely headphone music for me where I can zone out of what I’m doing and immerse myself in sound.

· Artist/Band to watch for 2022

I think Melin Melyn are definitely up there on the list of bands to watch out for in 2022. I’m also quite excited to see where Golden Dregs go, I think they are super exciting band to watch and absolutely loved them at End of the Road this year.

· Plans for the New Year

Finishing my album some point next year is the main goal although I’m still quite away off from any kind of prediction of when that will be. I’m currently just enjoying the process of recording and then we will see what happens!

Thank you Teddy, we can’t wait for that album!
