Rad Releases 21 – Gregory Hoepffner of Kabbel / SURE

For the final week 2 weeks of the year, as the countdown to the end of 2021 approaches, we take a personal look back on familiar names, labels, promoters, and musicians’ most loved releases of the past 12 months. It’s a time we enjoy and look forward to, through the contributions we get to find new music discoveries, releases we may have missed throughout the year. When we handed the site over last year for the 2020 feature, our 10th year into our annual special, we loved the contributions and it became apparent that we all found ourselves reconnecting with music new and old. Following another challenging year, the one constant has been how artists and their labels have adapted and produced some of the best records of our time, it’s those releases that fans have depended on to get them through another year.

Now in its 11th year, we are delighted to hand the site over once more, as we let our favourites share more details about their year in music.

Our next take-over comes from the French Multi-instrumentalist Gregory Hoepffner. Currently, Gregory is part of these impressive outfits- Almeeva, Jean Jean, SURE., or Juni (ex-Kid North), throughout the year we’ve featured several releases from the musician, as back in April Gregory unveiled a new release under his alter ego kabbel. Following the release and various music videos, in November SURE. returned with the release of their flawless EP “Nineteen Years”. We are pleased to hear more from Gregory about his year in music..

  • Top Releases of 2021:

Low – Hey what

What band can still break new grounds almost 30 years into their career ?

Absolutely beautiful and uncompromising.

Grouper – Shade

Grouper was my best remedy for many late working nights this year. Everything she does sounds so effortless and inspired, instantly soothing.

James Blake – Friends That Break Your Heart

This album revived my love for James Blake. The title track is devastatingly moving. It’s all gold from the last 4 tracks.

Yves Tumor – The Asymptotical World

No one is « rocking » like Yves Tumor right now, it’s like a futuristic version of the 70’s rock legends.

Mykki Blanco – Broken Hearts And Beauty Sleep

We have to celebrate artists that put their whole lives into an artistic perspective. Mykki Blanco is without a doubt one of them. So much freedom radiating from this record.

  • The best show you have played this year / gig attended

It’s not fair, as the only shows I’ve been to this year are shows where actually I played.

So I have to mention both :

SURE – Paris @ Petit Bain : remember the viral video « drummer is a the wrong gig » ? That was me being way too intense on stage after a year and a half break.

KABBEL – Paris @ Supersonic : first show with absolutely no instrument to hide behind, quite intense too. But very fun to just be a singer and nothing else.

  • Your own highlight of the year

Learning how to handle 4 releases with no label, failing and learning about the crazy world of digital distribution.

  • Best discovery this year?

Front De Cadeaux

Completely hooked on their « slow rave » sound. Super dark & deep, sexy and addictive.

  • Artist/Band to watch for 2022

Already love the sound from their « Lost Ghosts » EP, bu I can tell that this band will morph into something unexpected and beautiful, they’ve got it.

A huge thank you! It’s been such an incredible year to discover your own releases and we can’t wait to hear more in 2022
