Out Now on Father/Daughter + Big Scary Monsters

Brooklyn trio Proper. are sharing a video for their new single, Red, White, & Blue. The Bartees Strange-produced track is the first taste of an upcoming 2022 album from the band. The song is Proper.’s first release on Father/Daughter Records, who have teamed up with Big Scary Monsters to co-release new music from Proper.

Having just wrapped up a tour with Glass Beach and Home Is Where, Proper. will embark on an East Coast tour with The Wonder Years today. In April 2022, Proper. will head to the UK for a two-week headline tour.

Red, White & Blue is the first performance video for the band. Explains vocalist/guitarist Erik Garlington“It felt like a no brainer. We ended up filming almost an hour of footage for this 2.5 minute song, and then it was stuck in our heads for days to come. I’m talking waking up in cold sweats mumbling something about ‘well dressed & charming, spangled & darling’, hearing 5/4 time signature in nature, and Rorschach test-esque images of Uncle Sam appearing in random places like the produce aisle at our bodegas. We definitely inhaled an ridiculous amount of fog machine smoke… Anyway, the video was a blast!”

This fierce drum shuffle blasts through the kit to initiate the proceedings for “Red, White, & Blue”. A gritty and powerful rhythm joins the ensemble at the same as the vocals and complex low-end inflicted by the bass which emphasizes the heavy notations of this release. The vocals and the intimate lyrics bring this personal touch to the forefront of the massive track the trio has created. This consistent flair of melancholy scorns its way into the journey, reflected in the tonality of the composition and the instrumentation. The lyrics become infectious, the audience will be chanting back at the angular melody from the first listen.

While the video was fun to film, lyrically the song takes a starkly different tack. “A lot of millennials in my life share the sentiment that being American feels like being in an abusive relationship that you can’t find the courage to leave. Uncle Sam is this charming older man that you find yourself drawn too and only realize way too late into the game what you’re really dealing with,” says Garlington, continuing, “I knew I wanted to focus on looking at what makes this country what it is, and how hopeless I feel to stop it.”

Proper.’s 2019 sophomore album I Spent the Winter Writing Songs About Getting Better was released on UK-based label Big Scary Monsters, and caught the attention of Father/Daughter as well as receiving praise from Pitchfork, The Independent, BrooklynVegan, Under the Radar, and Afropunk among other titles. The two labels will release a full length from Proper. in 2022, more details will be announced in the new year.
