Share a cover of Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s truly perfect pop song, “Murder On The Dancefloor” out now via Moshi Moshi
Girl Ray, the London three-piece comprising Poppy Hankin, Iris McConnell and Sophie Moss, today share a rework of Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s classic “Murder On The Dancefloor” as their festive offering this year, following a premiere on Mark Riley on BBC Radio 6 Music. The band, who have weaved their signature sound into the track – a highlight during their recent festival appearances – said the following:
“”Murder On The Dancefloor” has always had a special place in our hearts – it was forever etched into our memory when a few years back at a post-show karaoke session in Bristol, I over-excitedly shoved the microphone to Iris’ lips when it was finally our turn to sing, chipping her front tooth in half for the remainder of the tour. Since then it has of course remained our karaoke song, and a favourite at our DJ sets. When we were looking for a song to cover for this year’s festival seasons, it seemed a natural fit. It became one of our favourite parts of our live set, and we thought it would be only right to record it in honour of Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s truly perfect pop song.”
The track comes accompanied by a video directed by Poppy Hankin, featuring the band at an office Christmas party. About the video, Girl Ray added:
“We’ve always wanted to work together in an office; I think we’re secretly middle-aged office workers at heart. None of us have been to an office party but they sound really fun so we decided to recreate one for our video. It felt like ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’ is the sort of song that would go down really well at an office party. Poppy seemed really excited about her new “gimbal” she’d bought for her iPhone, so we decided to let her film, direct, and edit the whole video. We couldn’t find any actual offices to make the video in, so Moshi Moshi reluctantly let us use their work space for it. Hopefully after they see the video they’ll take us on full time.”
Girl Ray suprise all with this flawless rework of a celebrated pop classic, bringing their personal style to forefront of their arrangement.
Following a standout live performance at this year’s End of The Road Festival, Girl Ray will headline The Line Of Best Fit’s Five Day Forecast at The Lexington in London on Friday 21st January 2022. Tickets for their intimate performance are available here. The band will also play at Doune The Rabbit Hole in Scotland on 17th July 2022 (tickets here).
“Murder On The Dancefloor” is the first music to be shared from the band since “Give Me Your Love”, a 7 minute+ electronic odyssey, recorded, produced and mixed by Joe Goddard and Al Doyle from Hot Chip, released last summer.
Girl Ray’s two albums Earl Grey (2017) and Girl (2019) are out now via Moshi Moshi. News of more music from the band will come soon.
