Oscar Scheller Shares New Single ‘Weirdo’
British musician and producer Oscar Scheller shares ‘Weirdo’, his first new single since the release of his album Boys Cry in early 2021. The single comes off the back of Scheller’s recent work on the PinkPantheress mixtape, where he produced two tracks including the single ‘I Must Apologise‘, making him the first producer to work with her after Mura Masa. Scheller’s recent credits no doubt signal him as a go-to producer for the new generation of breakout acts shaping the sound of 2021 and beyond, including Willow Kayne, Tkay Maidza, Biig Piig, Chloe Moriondo, Matilda Mann, spill tab, Blu DeTiger, Raissa, Gracey and more.
“Weirdo” is simply explosive. These colossal, angular tones and textures commence the fierce course for this ensemble. With these aggressive rhythms at the center of this ensemble, the lyrics give off a complete u-turn. Scheller brings this volatility and intimacy into the lyrical flow. Delivered with this exuberant push with the vocal melodies. As the track descends into chaos for the mighty finale, the tones and textures collide with a big push to create this immersive and lasting finale.
Where the Boys Cry album saw Scheller open up conversations around masculinity and vulnerability, ‘Weirdo’ continues with this candid self-awareness, but this time for a tongue-in-cheek reflection on Scheller’s own questionable romantic patterns. In his words, “‘Weirdo’ is about the unhealthy behaviour of being attracted to emotionally unavailable people, and kind of just laughing at myself because it’s a habit I’m constantly trying to break! The song came about when I developed strong feelings for someone who lived in LA. It all started with me asking myself ‘why can’t I like someone who’s in the same city as me?? I’m such a weirdo’. I’d like people to be more self aware of their patterns, for themselves and others, but also see the funny side of it too. It’s good to laugh at yourself. I started the track in London then finished it in LA. My friend Franco Reid added some sprinkles (we also made my track ‘Peach’ together).”
Oscar Scheller is also recognised as one of Ashnikko’s primary collaborators, producing her gold single ‘Stupid’ as well as multiple tracks on her 2021 DEMIDEVIL mixtape. Their most recent collaboration saw them team up for the official remix of Lady Gaga‘s ‘Plastic Doll‘. Other recent tracks include ‘Tasty’ by Shygirl, ‘Second Guessing’ & ‘George’ by Arlo Parks and ‘Tokyo Love Hotel’ from Rina Sawayama’s self-titled debut album, plus his duet with Litany on their track ‘Playlist’ earlier this year.
