Irish alt-pop artist April (she/her) shares new single ‘Someone That I Made’, accompanied by a visualiser she created. The single follows the previous track and video ‘Piece of Me’, which was released in addition to the news of her signing to Atlantic Records UK. Breaking onto the scene in 2020, her first two EPs and standout singles like The Impossible Task of Feeling Complete and ‘Forever (To Feel Like Tonight)’ announced April’s arrival as a fresh new voice from the Irish scene. Her clever pop hooks and intimate vocals captured listeners and critics alike, earning accolades including a 4-star EP review from NME, three features as BBC Radio 1’s ‘Chillest Record In The World’, and a feature on Alfie Templeman’s songOne More Day.’

Someone That I Made is a truly personal journey, intimacy exudes from the vocal introduction through to the lyrics. A lyrical story many can connect with combined with this personal and sweet film. Strong currents of melancholia run through the ensemble intensified by the dynamic and far-reaching vocal range from April which effortlessly floats above the electronic elements. The impressive vocal tone captures the softer sounds through to the more fierce infliction, all whilst allowing emotion to resonate within each word. Soaring elements shine in the experimental environment, the melody becomes intoxicating and the overall journey just hooks you.

‘Someone That I Made’ was produced with British artist and producer Clarence Clarity (aka Adam Crisp) known for his work with Rina Sawayama, including their recent official remix of Lady Gaga’s ‘Free Woman. Based between London and her hometown in Ireland’s County Kildare, the 22-year-old explains that the track is an ode to her roots; “Someone That I Made is about being away from comfort and missing family and safe familiar places, it’s about growing up and realizing everything you need is already there no matter where you go. Clarence Clarity sent me a little loop, and I wrote the entire song in my old room in London. Clarence then fleshed out the music so that the entire song was made without ever having met each other in real life.”

April’s introduction came in late 2019 after her Soundcloud demos – recorded and uploaded in the same day – gained powerful word-of-mouth momentum. Her first EP New Conditions was released in early 2020 right as lockdown hit, an experience she embraced as an opportunity to adapt. Second EP Luna is a testament to this, with its four tracks crafted entirely via a series of Zoom calls between April, Fred Macpherson and rising Irish rapper Kojaque. As her experiences have expanded, so too has her sonic direction, inspired largely by her current inspirations which she cites as FKA twigs, King Princess, Charli XCX and The 1975. Moving between Ireland and London, April’s exposure to different people, places, and creative scenes will no doubt leave their mark, and set in motion a pivotal upcoming year for the young artist, further bolstered by her signing to Atlantic Records UK.
