Montreal-based group TOPS share new song “Waiting,” a track with upbeat drums and David Carriere’s twinkling guitar riffs laced together with singer Jane Penny’s breathy vocals and catchy melodies.

Of the new song, Penny comments: “I’m a very nostalgic person and the last year only made me more so. Nostalgia cuts both ways, memories of my past fed me during that time, but became so vivid that they began to seep the colour from the present. I wrote this song as a tribute to the early days of TOPS and the romanticized version that I have of those times, but it became an exploration of the effect of time in general. When I think back on my life, where am I?”

Waiting” oozes this compelling vibrance that dazzles throughout. Nostalgic affection emits from the ensemble ad provides this immersive element we can all find ourselves captivated with, obsessing over. Ethereal vocal melodies deliver this honest lyrical touch bringing this personal influence into the centre of this ensemble. Another stunning release from this vital outfit.

“Waiting” marks the second offering from TOPS this year, following “Party Again,” which was released in conjunction with the announcement of their North American tour, which began last week. They are also confirmed to play next year’s Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona.

TOPS were formed in Montreal when song-writing duo David Carriere and Jane Penny decided to join forces with drummer Riley Fleck. Since then they have become a hugely influential underground act, creating a space for sophisticated pop music in the indie world.

Their tendency to opt towards making straight-forward, stripped down and honest recordings lets their pop song-writing shine out in the open. With a heart firmly attached to their sleeves, their songcraft delves into the emotional intricacy of personal relationships, asking questions about power and desire. Riley Fleck’s measured drumming and David Carriere’s trademark guitar licks mesh with Marta Cikojevic’s lush keyboards. All these elements work in tandem and in service of Jane Penny’s unmistakable, wistful voice.

The result of this mixture is a collection of four self-produced records and a handful of singles that cover a range of moods and a complex emotional realm while maintaining a groove and musicality. Soft rock infused pop hits flow easily, surrounded by their signature moody ballads.
