wych elm Share New Track “Executioner”

Taken From Upcoming EP “Rabbit Wench” due 24th September

Following the release of their first piece of new music in two years, wych elm have released their second single, Executioner, from their upcoming EP. Clocking in at just under 2 minutes, the track is described as snappy and direct with a Pixies-esque pop sensibility across a chorus that you will be singing for days.

As with first single Scolds Bridle, the track has a significant message in its lyrics. Telling vocalist Caitlin’s story of a relationship with a person who treated her badly and of her anger and frustration with that person for treating her in that way. The song isn’t about that person specifically, it takes a more introspective response to emotional abuse. Exploring the thoughts that were provoked after leaving them, why she put up with it and how she moved on following that experience.

Speaking about the inspiration for the track, Caitlin said “I wrote ‘Executioner’ about a relationship I had where I was constantly berated and insulted. It got to a point where I fed off it, I wanted to be hurt because it was the only attention I got. At the time I thought it was better than nothing, though it made me greatly depressed. I wanted to be the one who was executed.”

With the new track “Executioner”, the vocals emerge first with the gritty guitar tone accompanying short after, the energy ramps up without warning and the soundscape intensifies and adds this fierce attitude into the mix. The instrumentation unites to bring this mighty kick into the complex landscape whilst devouring this distinct rebellious nature. The perfectly controlled yet crushing cymbal crashes and the scrappy yet rivetting percussive production adds yet another diverse attribute into the mix.

wych elm creates this ensemble with this formidable energy flawlessly harnessing the direction of this track. The moody vocal harmonies allow this certain volatility to emerge within this creation. Despite the mammoth soundscape and short yet fearsome verses, the lyrics tend to the fierce attitude component whilst also allowing intimacy to shine. Once again wych elm showcases their infectious energy whilst manipulating this ominous aura. Working on their brooding, intense atmosphere which effortlessly engulfs the audience.
