Pizzagirl releases the video for ‘sugar ray’
Extends his UK tour – in association with The Music Venue Trust and National Lottery’s ReviveLive initiative
Liverpool alt-pop icon Pizzagirl unveils the music video for ‘sugar ray’ the sprightly indie-pop single from recent album ‘softcore mourn’ – out in July via Heist or Hit (Her’s, Brad Stank, Eades). He’ll also be heading out on an extensive UK tour through September and October – with a raft of the dates in association with The Music Venue Trust and National Lottery’s ReviveLive initiative (dates below – reach out with media/press request).
The video – directed by Corey Rid – sees a depressed and defeated Pizzagirl, worn down by the music industry and his team around him, attempt to hold it together through a day of promo (completely fiction, we promise you…). It follows the record in finding inspiration from the atmosphere portrayed in Sofia Coppola’s ‘Lost In Translation’ (think Bill Murray in the whiskey commercial).
The director and star offer their thoughts on the process below:
Corey: “With a track that carries such strong emotion, it was key that we encapsulated exactly that. Alongside the incredible team that helped shape the atmosphere around the set, Liam took to the role of a depressed superstar and came away with scars to prove it.”
Pizzagirl: “Sugar ray the movie, almost semi-autobiographical , is a wingless fly on the wall story of a rockstar going through the motions, packed with all the rock and roll cliches, dressing room smashing and face slapping. Following on from the ‘car freshener aftershave’ video, I’d like to think this rounds off the feelings of the album nicely (or not), those feelings probably better kept on the phone notes.”
‘Sugar Ray’ focuses on this hypnotic groove emitting from the repeated loop of crucial textures. The electronic formation starts and then the captivating vocal melodies from Pizzagirl ooze charm and direct the ensemble. Those whirling tones become the perfect collaboration to the softer vocal notes, ultimately combining soft tones with this pop-infused electric flavour. Pop hooks, addictive melodies, and this crucial lyrical course that delivers this realm of reality, intimacy, and lashes of emotion yet delivered within this joyous wealth of upbeat textures. Another track to prove the album we are longing for will be filled with greatness.
Pizzagirl has earned acclaim across the board with a persona that is part surreptitious hit maker and part clinically-out-of-it TV host veering dangerously off script. The Guardian, The Independent and The Sunday Times have offered broadsheet credibility, and indie titans in NME, DIY and DORK, as well as documenters of style and culture at The FADER, CRACK, VICE, Clash and The Line of Best Fit have offered championing words.
On the airwaves a host of DJs have labelled themselves fans, including Annie Mac and Gemma Bradley at BBC Radio 1; Lauren Laverne, Shaun Keaveny and Radcliffe & Maconie at BBC 6 Music; as well as Travis Holocombe at KCRW.
As well as solo tours through the UK and Europe, he’s been invited to play at SXSW, Live At Leeds, The Great Escape, Liverpool Sound City and more.
