Van Houten release new single ‘Now And Then’
Announce new EP ‘Home Alone Pt. 2’ for September 10th via CLUE Records
Leeds lo-fi dream rockers Van Houten announce new EP – ‘Home Alone Pt. 2’ – for September 10th via CLUE Records, and share the latest woozy cut from it, ‘Now And Then’.
Self-described as “slacker pop with a cherry on top”, Van Houten perfectly encapsulate hazy, lackadaisical summer evenings with their languid sound. Layering warm, tape-warped guitars against gently hushed vocals, watery organs and lilting guitars it heralds the gentle psychedelia of a Chris Cohen or Mac Demarco.
This carefree sound however is juxtaposed against more downbeat themes, as songwriter Louis Sadler explains:
“This tune is about willingly being hurt by somebody, and dealing with being unfulfilled or neglected in order to keep this person around. It’s about feeling alone whilst being with somebody romantically, but not really doing anything to change the situation because you need them beyond your control or logic. I like to contrast sad themes in the lyrics with more hopeful and easy going instrumentals and I think this is a good example of doing so. I was listening to loads of old South American bossa nova tunes and I wanted to try and combine parts of the relaxed and effortless sound with our usual style and give it a light and poppy twist.”
The new track and accompanying film start with this comforting soundbite before the intricate yet atmospherical guitar rhythms cascade across the insatiable ambiance that Van Houten has crafted. This elusive world opens with this calming vibe and simply engulfs the audience, there’s nowhere else they need to be when the harmonies are this blissful. Sweeter yet raw vocal lyrics adorn the immersive instrumentation and assist with the free-flowing direction of this piece.
This outfit creates these visionary landscapes and continues to keep their fan base on their toes, this fearless nature can be embraced from this captivating band. Unlimited potential.
Van Houten have already seen support from BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, KCRW and Amazing Radio to date, and have opened for indie heavyweights Jay Som and BDRMM. Festival appearances include The Great Escape and Live At Leeds, and they aren’t about to slow down, having already sold out the Belgrave Music Hall in under 24 hours, where they’ll debut some more new tracks on August 6th.
‘Now And Then’ is the new single from Van Houten, out now via CLUE Records, ahead of new EP ‘Home Alone Pt. 2’ – out September 10th.
