DZ Deathrays

Positive Rising: Part 2

With Positive Rising: Part 1, DZ Deathrays elevated their music to an even more energetic plateau and the Australian dance/punk three-piece raise the stakes again and turn it up by a few notches again with the sprawling and concluding part of the Positive Rising opus.

Part 2 is even more expansive than Part 1 but still retains the same energetic nature throughout resulting in a hugely enjoyable and vibrant listening experience.

Straight from the off, the opening songs the hazy, Skeleton Key, the punky Fear The Anchor (which features guest vocals from the wonderful Ecca Vandal) and the anthemic All Or Nothing set things off with a varied array of styles but all with that familiar DZ Deathrays energy and from then on, it’s a nonstop blur of vivacity.

The quirky Kerosene offers a bit of a change of pace and shows a different and welcome side to the band while Riff City is definitely an apt title for the song! Make Yourself Mad is another anthem on waiting but comes with a cautionary tale of non-stop information, its is dangerous and urges thinking for yourself.

The quickfire Golden Retriever makes way for the funky dirge of Swept Up before the album concludes with the Stooges go electro sleaze of Run The Red and the closing ecstasy of Positive Rising itself is the perfect way to end not just this album but the whole Positive Rising saga. It has an undeniable epic nature and as the track fades out in a blaze of glorious swathes of noise and feedback, it definitely seems like a fitting ending.

Positive Rising: Part 2 is an immense listen packed full of everything that you love about DZ Deathrays but the songs on here have an even more expansive outlook and it will be very interesting to see where the band go next with their music. Until that point though, revel in the glory of the Positive Rising double bill.
