Squid

Big Green Field

Album Review/Feature by Gavin Brown

Warp Records have unleashed some of the most forward-thinking music that has ever been released and the label’s ethos has always been that forward-thinking nature. From Autechre, Aphex Twin and Hudson Mohawke to LFO, Squarepusher and Flying Lotus as well as so much more, the label has brought out some of the most vibrant artists and records there has ever been. While the label is best known for its electronic music output, it definitely has a history in bringing out more alternative, indie and rock music by the likes of Maximo Park, Grizzly Bear and Gang Gang Dance

The labels latest signings are Brighton’s post punk heroes Squid and they definitely fall into the forward-thinking lineage that Warp is renowned for. The band has been making waves for some time now but since signing to Warp, they have just brought out their debut album Big Green Field and it is something special indeed.

Coming on like a hybrid of influences like Talking Heads and Wire but combined with their own vibe and uniquely British soundscapes, interludes, and splashes of humour, Squid definitely live up to the hype that proceeded the release of this album.

From the moment the album kicks into life as the hazy album intro Resolution Square segues into the buzz of G.S.K, you know you are listening to a special album and it is one that takes in songs like the discordant and fuzzy Narrator (with brilliant guest vocals from Skye Murphy), the quirky Boy Racers (especially as the song concludes with its phenomenal and vibrant outro), the understated triumph of The Flyover and the energy of Peel Street until the epic Pamphlets ends the album on a sheer high.

Squid have certainly made waves with Big Green Field and it is a bold and ambitious statement with the songs to match. With a debut as strong as this, the band have definitely made a defining statement already and they will continue to grow and grow as a band for sure and let their music grow with them, for now though, revel in the majesty of Big Green Field and the expansive and wondrous songs on it.
