Circe Releases New Single ‘Going Down’

London dark-pop artist Circe bursts into 2021 with triumphant new single ‘Going Down’.

Holding nothing back, ‘Going Down’ is an exhilarating exploration of female sexuality and queer liberation. Sexual fantasy mixes with holy ground amidst technicolour synth trills and stadium-sized drum hits.

I’m not supposed to, but I fucking love you” – this first line sets the premise of an unrestrained, romantic tale of forbidden love retold by a genre-less millennial aesthete. Packed into 2 and half minutes, Circe’s own unique ethereal, textured sound makes stops along the way to pick up a Jay Z drum beat and  a Life Without Buildings vocal hook before finally arriving at a Charli XCX indebted chorus. The sound is carefully cultivated, including recreating the spectral tones of vintage carousels, and recording vocals underwater

Poetry from Circe’s teenage diary entries – records of a lapsed catholic youth – is merged with the hot words of Anais Nin, and collages of Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 Romeo and Juliet adaptation, for a potent cocktail of influences. The music takes the same dramatic sonic ride through the twists and turns of the rhapsody of forbidden love.

There’s this formidable energy from Circe which runs throughout the latest composition and instantly defines this artist as one of the most promising for our time. Seriously, the dynamic vocal range fearlessly dominates the fierce rhythms and yet alludes to an angelic attachment. Circe brings this alluring and soft melodic touch to this ardent exploration, the lyrics ooze with this standout power and the instrumentation brings this harsher edge to the atmosphere. Allowing this industrial infusion of electronic elements and buoyant cadency with the charm of Circe pushing the arrangement to new depths, this is an exhilarating listen with an infectious structure. Bringing in this raw element from the brutally honest lyrics, another addictive enhancement to this release. A track that will no doubt be one of the most listened to of this year for Circe has crafted this flawless pop inspired composition with the ultimate hook.

Her well-crafted world, alongside the undeniable hooks, has already seen Circe start to make waves. Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson of BBC 6 Music, as well as Jack Saunders on BBC Radio 1 have offered support on the airwaves. The FADER, The Line of Best FitClash MagazineDORK MagazineWonderland and more have been enthusiastic champions at press and on the live side, Circe has sold out London’s Paper Dress Vintage and performed at Iceland Airwaves.
