New album Eau De Bonjourno out 5th March via figureight records
Toronto’s Bernice today share the playful pop of ‘It’s Me, Robin‘, the new single from upcoming new album Eau de Bonjourno, due 5th March via figureight records. Pre-order here: https://bernice.bandcamp.com/album/eau-de-bonjourno
‘Toronto’s ever evolving backing band’ return two years after their previous full length Puff: In the air without a shape, this time with legendary Shahzad Ismaily (Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Elvis Costello, Iggy Pop) on production duties. Eau de Bonjourno is a playful, intricate record that pulls the group’s improvisational jazz mind-sets through the forms of contemporary pop, new age and R&B.
The band explain ‘It’s Me, Robin’: “Simply put, here is Robin [Dann, songwriter] talking to herself. How to be? How to live? A small metal bowl floats away into the lake and sinks – but below the waves she sits on her cool bottom, her shape shifting self not full of water but of the water, edges dissolving as her identity reforms, grows, reforms, grows, reforms, like the fascia of a body reinventing itself with each twist and bend. A sign, a cross, a road, a potato – who are you?”
Bernice continues to impress. With “It’s Me, Robin” the outfit use delicate organic textures and introduce these textures into their expansive exploration, battling with the deep groove and intricate noises. Bernice inject ferocity into the compelling visionary piece with the blurts of synthesized sax. Bernice play around with their soulful harmonies and fragile songwriting and bounce this into a jazz based smooth but experimental soundscape. Bernice provide enchanting explorations.
