Rad Releases 20 – Thanya Iyer

It’s that time once again, as the countdown to the end of 2020 rapidly approaches and we quickly want to move away from this year- we take a personal look back on familiar names, labels, promoters, and musicians’ best releases of the past 12 months. In what has been a challenging year for all, the one constant has been how artists and their labels have adapted and produced some of the best records of our time and it’s those releases that have the audience has depended on to get them through the year.

This year the Rad Releases special celebrates 10 years, to mark the decade-long feature we let our favorites take over the site to tell us the records that have kept them going throughout this trying year. Telling us how they’ve adapted, if they’ve returned to a loved record and what we can look forward to from them next year.

Our next takeover comes from an artist who inspired us this year. In the first month of our lockdown we were introduced to the stunning sounds from Thanya Iyer. In the summer of this year, Thanya released new album “Kind” via Topshelf Records. Thanya Iyer conveys such strong power in her vocal abilities, the songwriting and the beautiful instrumentations- a truly mesmerizing force. You need to seek this artist and follow the harmony, for “Kind” is one of the most ravishing records of 2020. Delighted to handover to Thanya to find out more about their year in music…

The best show you have played this year / gig attended (if you had the opportunity at the start of the year)

Had an amazing time at one of our last shows before lock down at our favourite True/False Film Festival on an amazing line up with Angel Bat David (Chicago), Abstract Black (Nashville) and Saltbreaker (Michigan). We also were really lucky to play POP Montreal this year at the beautiful Rialto theatre.

Has there been any record that’s got you through this year?

Definitely Moses’s album!

How have you adapted with releasing/recording/promoting during this year?

We were set to release KIND this year and we kinda just did it! It was hard not being able to connect with our friends through touring and hopefully we’ll do an album launch one day. But we still feel the support from our community online and we’re looking to record our next album and having been making demos remotely

Best discovery this year?

Genevieve Artadi’s Dizzy Strange Summer!

As this is our 10th year of Rad Releases, we want to look back on your 10 years- has there been on standout moment/standout record of the past 10 years for you?

Noname’s albums! Jamilla Woods everything!

Artist/Band to watch for 2021

Mereba! Her album the Jungle is the only way out has been on repeat for me and I think she is just amazing.

Plans for the New Year

Start recording the next album/visual album sequel! Hopefully sitting on my friends couches once again.

Thank you so much! Been a real pleasure in discovering your music this year.
