Rad Releases 20 – Death Valley Girls

It’s that time once again, as the countdown to the end of 2020 rapidly approaches and we quickly want to move away from this year- we take a personal look back on familiar names, labels, promoters, and musicians’ best releases of the past 12 months. In what has been a challenging year for all, the one constant has been how artists and their labels have adapted and produced some of the best records of our time and it’s those releases that have the audience has depended on to get them through the year.

This year the Rad Releases special celebrates 10 years, to mark the decade-long feature we let our favorites take over the site to tell us the records that have kept them going throughout this trying year. Telling us how they’ve adapted, if they’ve returned to a loved record and what we can look forward to from them next year.

Los Angeles dystopian punk/occult glam rockers Death Valley Girls are the next outfit to take on our end of year special. This year, one of our most played records has to be the latest release from Death Valley Girls. Their new record Under the Spell of Joy has given us the escape that we needed and we’re sure their audience will agree. Throughout the year the band has been releasing singles in anticipation, firstly for their EP release in May and then for Levitation Sessions before October welcomed the latest release via Suicide Squeeze Records. Their art has been a vital contribution to many worlds. We handover to find out more about their year in music…

The best show you have played this year / gig attended (if you had the opportunity at the start of the year)

DVG- The best show we played this year was our virtual Amoeba Records in store performance, first time we played new songs & it was exciting to do it for Amoeba, one of our favorite record stores!

Has there been any record that’s got you through this year?

DVG– There’s been more than one because we’ve been going back and revisiting old favorites in our record collections at home, Iggy Pop – The Idiot, Brian Eno – Here Come The Warm Jets, X-Ray Spex- Germ Free Adolescents & DEVO -Q:Are We Not Men? A:We Are Devo Future have made a great soundtrack for the year!

How have you adapted with releasing/recording/promoting during this year?

DVG- Honestly just remembering and continuing to be thankful. And reaching out to everyone and checking in on them and thanking them. We were on the road so much before we never had time to really stop and think. This year, while totally dark and terrifying, has given us room to consider what is important and how lucky we are.

Best discovery this year?

Minami Duetsch – Krautrock, psychedelic inspired greatness from Tokyo, Japan, found out about them through the amazing band Kikagaku Moyo & their record label GuruGuru Brain.

As this is our 10th year of Rad Releases, we want to look back on your 10 years- has there been on standout moment/standout record of the past 10 years for you?

DVG- A couple stand out moments for us was meeting and working with both Iggy Pop & Roky Erickson!  Stand out records was the return of the “Back From The Grave” compilations on Crypt Records!
