Rad Releases 20 – Bubblewrap Collective

It’s that time once again, as the countdown to the end of 2020 rapidly approaches and we quickly want to move away from this year- we take a personal look back on familiar names, labels, promoters, and musicians’ best releases of the past 12 months. In what has been a challenging year for all, the one constant has been how artists and their labels have adapted and produced some of the best records of our time and it’s those releases that have the audience has depended on to get them through the year.

This year the Rad Releases special celebrates 10 years, to mark the decade-long feature we let our favorites take over the site to tell us the records that have kept them going throughout this trying year. Telling us how they’ve adapted, if they’ve returned to a loved record and what we can look forward to from them next year.

Our next takeover comes from such a dedicated Cardiff-based label Bubblewrap Collective. For over 10 years, Bubblewrap Collective has been releasing and championing some of the best releases and artists from Wales. From March of this year through to December, Bubblewrap Collective has released an abundance of records- be it single releases, albums, or EPs, all of which were mainly published throughout most of the lockdown. They’ve continued to add some of the most vital new artists to their roster and we’re blown away by the amount of talent they promote. We handover to Rich to find out more about Bubblewrap Collective‘s year in music…

Year in Music

2020’s been a turbulent year. We’ve been hit like many others with the dreaded covid and not released as much as we’d usually like. However, we did manage to press a few records to vinyl.

You can check them out here:

Georgia Ruth – Mai

On her third album, Welsh Music Prize winner Georgia Ruth returns to her roots. Having moved back to her native Aberystwyth following the birth of her son, Mai was recorded in the town’s Grade-II listed Joseph Parry Hall over the course of one week in Spring 2019. Named after the renowned composer and professor, the room was used as a venue for chamber concerts throughout the twentieth century and offered musicians a view of the sun setting over the castle as they worked.

Quiet Marauder – Tiny Men Parts

Seven years on from its initial release, Cardiff-based Quiet Marauder unleash a contemporary reimagining of their record-baiting, format-stretching debut album MEN. Cut back from its original guise of 111 tracks and nearly five hours, its sister EP, Tiny Men Parts, clocks in at a much more
manageable nine songs (and just over 25 minutes). Tiny Men Parts is a celebration of Quiet Marauder’s live band over the last few years, stepping away from the lo-fi, bedroom aesthetic of their debut and embracing the bombastic rock conjured by the group as a whole.

We’ve also released a lot of excellent singles digitally, including new music from Teddy Hunter, Rhodri Brooks, Ivan Moult and remixes from Gwenno, Accu, Quodega, Cotton Wolf and Kayla Painter to name a few.

You can listen to all these and more over on our Spotify playlist: :

It was also a great privilege to see our 3 latest albums (Georgia Ruth’s ‘Mai’, Right Hand Left Hand’s ‘Zone Rouge’ and Cotton Wolf’s ‘Ofni’) being shortlisted for the Welsh Music Prize, and the annual ceremony was sorely missed, amongst all the other Cardiff staples in the calendar. Swn Festival, Hub Festival, Bubblewrap’s Xmas Party, the list goes on…

Whilst we’ve not been as busy, 2020’s been full of excellent new albums. Here’s 10 of my highlights from Wales:

Colorama – Chaos Wonderland

Don Leisure – Steel Zakuski

El Goodo – Zombie

Ghostlawns – Motorik

Islet – Eyelet

John Mouse – The Goat

Kelly Lee Owens – Inner Song

Keys – Home Schooling

Kidsmoke – A Vision in the Dark

Seazoo – Joy

Bubblewrap has also been involved with putting online streams on at our HQ, Cultvr Lab. We’ve had the pleasure of working with On Par Productions and 4pi Productions to bring incredible live sets from the likes of Teddy Hunter, Rosehip Teahouse, DJ Yoda, Panic Shack and a plethora of other Bubblewrap acts. You can catch up on all the sessions at

Here’s what we’re looking forward to doing in 2021…
Obviously, the BIG thing is a return to gig going at some point. But we already have some albums in the works from Ritual Cloak, My Name is Ian, more from Quiet Marauder and a very special 10 year vinyl release of Little Arrow’s debut album ‘Music, Masks & Poems’.

Thank you so much for everything you’ve introduced us to throughout the year! Excited for the next year from BC!
