Laura Marling Shares The Lockdown Sessions

+ New Video For “Song For Our Daughter”

The Album Receives Marling’s Second Grammy Award Nomination Following A Fourth Mercury Prize Nomination

Laura Marling is pleased to share The Lockdown Sessions, streaming now. The four tracks, lifted from Laura’s acclaimed album Song For Our Daughter, were recorded stripped back and solo during the extended lockdown period from her home studio in London.

It’s been a bittersweet year for Laura Marling. With her sold out European and US headline tours, originally booked to introduce fans to new music, put on ice shortly after announcing them, the pandemic and ensuing lockdown threatened to turn a hectic year of activity into a damp squib. Seizing the moment, Laura insisted on bringing the album’s release forward from its proposed Summer release date, dropping it at a week’s notice right in the heart of all the uncertainty in April. Why wait?

It was arguably the first proper lockdown album release, offering listeners a warm and tender listen that seemed to tap into the mood of a nation that needed soothing with a musical hug. Quite irrespective of the pandemic, Song For Our Daughter is Laura Marling at her most affecting; all lilting melodies and beguiling, smart songcraft that surely rates as one of her finest records to date.

With all promotional activity turning to a screen in her front room, Laura was the first to take her music back on stage, streaming a ticketed live show from London’s Union Chapel directly to her European fans and then her North American fans too, on the same evening. In association with Driift, the show immediately set the bar high for lockdown live events, with a cinematic aura to the Saturday evening performance that, even from the comfort of your own sofa, felt like a genuine moment. It went some way to informing artists and the music industry at large that live events shouldn’t be paused indefinitely. A second event, billed as part of the BBC Proms and accompanied by orchestral backing, received a live radio and television broadcast direct from the Royal Albert Hall.

Song For Our Daughter gave Laura her fourth Mercury Music Prize nomination, and whilst it ultimately lost out to Kiwanuka on the night, it was not only the bookies’ joint favourite, but also many of the judges’ too, who spoke adoringly of this fine record. And as the year now draws to a close, Song For Our Daughter, deservingly finds itself nominated for a prestigious Grammy Award, Laura’s second, for Best Folk Album.  And as the end of year lists get hotly debated online, Song For Our Daughter has unsurprisingly become a mainstay. A reliable constant.

To cap an extraordinary, unpredictable year, Laura now releases The Lockdown Sessions. Recorded at her home studio in London, the four acoustic versions are stripped back to where they first started; with just Laura and her guitar.  All four tracks can be streamed here

Such sublime and tender renditions effortlessly capturing the emotional intensity in the powerful lyrics.

Song For Our Daughter is out now via her new record labels, Chrysalis and Partisan Records.

Details of a second album by LUMP; Laura’s other project with Tunng’s Mike Lindsay, will be revealed imminently.
